GOP ridicule of medals should outrage veterans
On the first night of the Republican National Convention, a Virginia delegate handed out bandages featuring Purple Hearts bearing the message: "It was just a self-inflicted scratch, but you see I got a Purple Heart for it."
This attempt to ridicule John Kerry's service record is indefensible, especially in light of President Bush's dubious military service. This juvenile stunt mocks every single soldier who has ever received a Purple Heart and those fighting right now in Iraq.
It is inexcusable to mock anyone who has ever put on a soldier's uniform. It is inexcusable to mock service and sacrifice. It is inexcusable to mock the honor of veterans who have been injured.
Republicans have overstepped the bounds of decency and should be ashamed. Every veteran, especially those who earned a Purple Heart, should be outraged.
