The double-standard among Republicans
Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 09:33 AM by northwest
Here's what I've had a hard time figuring out:

OK, so I was recently thinking about some things I've heard repukes say on TV and so forth. I've heard the mantra from these people on a couple occasions specifically stating that we shouldn't care what other countries think of us in regards to any consequences of our foreign policy.

I'm thinking to myself, OK, but here's the double-standard they have invoked. If we're going to be isolationist and not care about what other countries think about us, then why are we doing things on the international scene that would provoke such a negative reaction (or a reaction at all) to what we are doing?? Why did * go to war in Iraq if he was so isolationist on an international scale?? If he truly was, he would have left Iraq the fuck alone. If he's the rugged, individualistic cowboy like they think he is, why does he care so much about invading other countries if he's trying to pass himself off as an isolationist??

And he IS thought of such by his supporters, believe it or not.

Here's my point, and it boils down to the old saying "either shit or get off the pot". If you're going to espouse the conservative ideal about being isolationist and not caring what other countries think about the US, then STAY THE HELL AWAY OF THE AFFAIRS OF OTHER COUNTRIES. You can't go starting unilateral wars with countries and threaten other countries with invasion and then give out isolationist rhetoric about looking out for #1 and not caring what the rest of the world thinks. Because that's just being hypocritical on their part. It's one of the most flawed areas of logic coming out of these people.

Don't care about other countries?? FINE. Then leave them the fuck alone.

1. You are right of course
But actually thinking about positions does not appear to be a trait of most Repub voters. If God and Church tell them Bush is the one, then they follow that path....
However, Independents might be very swayed by this argument.

than normal people are.

4. I don't understand,
If I don't care what my neighbor thinks about something I'm doing down the road, I don't consider that to be "isolationist" per se. To me, an isolationist wouldn't leave their own yard.

When I think if isolationists in the repuke realm, I think of Pat Buchanan. I've never had the impression that he was part of the mainstream repukes.

5. And the cost of isolationism and aggression
is paid for in the blood of our troops, the strain on their families and a $$ debt which swallows up many of the things which have made this country great.

There are also boycotts of american products in countries which were allies only 3 years ago.

6. In thinking about what your're saying and ...
I'm not sure that it's a *necessarily* inconsistent position.

I can care about what you do to the point of doing something about what you're doing ... without caring about you think about what I'm going to do about it.

An example...

A parent cares that his child plays with fire ... the parent cares enough to stop the child from doing it ... maybe by spanking the child and correcting the behavior.

Let's say the child doesn't like the parents corrective behavior.

Does the parent care about what the child thinks in this situation? Is the parent not going to correct the child's behavior merely because he's concerned about what the child thinks about it?

If you suggest that Bush doesn't care what other nations think ... then if he invades Iraq in spite of the disapproval of other nations it would seem to be consistent with his not caring what others think.

Maybe you're suggesting something else? ... Maybe you meant to say something else?

Just wondering.
