5. Called: Bringing the War Home
Direct TV in family room, and not in same room with computer....sorry.

One thing that strikes me is that Kerry was a leader at a very young age. I like that in a commander in chief.

8. I hope someone tapes this for the internet!! Repeat at 1am (eastern time)
Lots of old footage that hasn't been shown before (at least, I haven't seen a lot of what they showed). There were lots of recordings between Nixon & Colson/Kissinger about John Kerry. They were very impressed with him & knew he had to be stopped. According to this program, Colson had noticed John O'Neill & thought he was a good counterpart to Kerry. (I suspect that what actually happened was that the Nixon team were looking for a veteran to go after Kerry & they found O'Neill.)

Nixon asked that O'Neill be brought to his office; he talked to O'Neill for a 45-minute meeting, in which he stressed the importance of countering Kerry's public remarks. Following the meeting, there were snippets of O'Neill showing up on news programs, and, ultimately, the now-famous Dick Cavett show. It was said by the voice-over (Brian Matthews) that each gave as good as the other & no common ground was found between them.

It was said that Colson, after having spent time in jail for Watergate, became a born-again Christian. He sent a note to Kerry, which (p/p) asked for his (Kerry's) forgiveness for any harm he might have caused Kerry.

Kerry also had met with Nixon several times after Kerry had become a senator. Although Kerry said that he & Nixon had several friendly discussions in later years, I've read that during his & Nixon's meeting together in the last month of Nixon's life that Nixon asked for Kerry's forgiveness. I was disappointed this wasn't revealed in this program. Kerry mentioned that Nixon was very intelligent (he was).

16. So did I. He's a true hero.
I forgot to mention Colson's two comments to Nixon about Kerry: "We'll keep hitting him, Mr. President" and "Let's destroy this young demagogue." Both men, Nixon and Colson, made amends with Kerry, apologizing for the harm they caused Kerry. John O'Neill is a lesser man -- and it shows in his face. On the other hand, Kerry has aged nicely in comparison, don't you think? As the saying goes, "God don't like ugly."

10. It was a pretty good program
and I think Kerry came out a hero. O'Neill was shown to be a prissy little twerp who allowed himself to be used by Nixon. There was one scene when a Vietnam vet questioned O'Neill, asking him what gave him the idea that he spoke for all Vietnam vets. O'Neill didn't have an answer.

12. MSNBC....and it didn't SLAM Kerry?!?! I am in shock..I really am!!!
I missed it because I am boycotting that channel because of
their tear downs about Kerry and our party. So I really am
shocked they actually played something 'Positive' for a change.
I'm sure it's won't last, just 'temporary brain glitches' on their parts.:eyes:

19. Haven't you watched "Hardball" or "Countdown"?
Despite all the negativity about "tweety", I'm convinced Chris Matthews is on our side. I've had that impression since the Democratic primaries.

Keith Olbermann is also on our side. Check out his blog at the MSNBC site.

Also, you may find this article about MSNBC's president, Rick Kaplan, interesting: http://www.chronicle.duke.edu/vnews/display.v/ART/2004/03/24/40618ae8d1b08

Excerpts:

Kaplan, who has won 34 Emmys and previously served as president of CNN News, spoke of a time when journalists such as famed Washington Post reporters Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward were idolized and journalism was a highly respected profession.

"It comes down to digging deeper--digging much deeper," he said. "If you just 'do the news,' you lose. Isn't the public right in wondering what we are doing?"

Offering examples from recent evening news magazine broadcasts, Kaplan explained that in treating the news as entertainment, the real issues are being overlooked.

17. THAT is what I was talking about a few weeks ago...
Just a regular vet who was steaming, can't see straight, pissed at O'Neill. That's poweful stuff.

I was intrigued by what Buchanan said, about how Nixon would've given him his due respect seeing that he'd won the nomination. That rings true to me. Nixon had respect for people who took shit and didn't let it beat them.

The photos of Nixon and Kerry were interesting, too.

Like the man said above: Colson and Nixon were bigger men than O'Neil. He's like a mine left in the ground since the war, still stupidly waiting to explode.

13. I watched and found it interesting.
It occurred to me while watching that the seemingly illogical animosity RWers have for Kerry could be rationalized by their perception that Kerry had something to do with Tricky Dick's downfall. And BTW, those tapes showed what a truly devious SOB Nixon really was. I'm glad the asshole left in disgrace. And that was an interesting shot of a young Rummy sitting with Chimpy Boy next to Poppy.

15. Good show
I really enjoyed seeing Kerry's presentation on Capitol Hill. Some of the most eloquent anti-war words I've heard.

Overall, I think Kerry comes out quite favorably, and the depths of Nixon's paranoia certainly speak volumes about the lengths to which they will go to smear. Nothing's changed with the Repubs.

...and it did shed a little more light on the Swift Boat clowns. They've been on Kerry since the beginning. I didn't realize that. Way, way too many coincidences.

21. So happy to have read your remarks. Found a place with a short version
of some of the material covered tonight. Unfortunately it's not as long as we'd like, but it's better than a kick in the head:

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/4534274/

The White House file
John O’Neill, selected to debate John Kerry about the Vietnam War, in the Oval Office with President Nixon and White House aide Charles Colson.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I believe the show was MSNBC Reports, being shown in the slot they had reserved for Deborah Norville. Not sure about this. It DID show O'Neill to be EXACTLY the small, spiteful, and prissy spoiled brat you would have expected him to be. The disabled vet in the wheel chair clearly told him he did NOT speak for all American VietNam vets.
The look at the babyish, parent-dependent Bush chewing his gum conspicuously, sitting between Pops and Rumsfeld in an audience listening to Nixon was contemptible.
Brian (can't remember his last name) said that Bush was in the National Guard at the time the clip was filmed in Washington, and that his Pops was the U.N. Ambassador.
I hope and pray they show it again. Where ELSE have you heard them include the ENTIRE clip beyond just the tiny fragment taken for the sound bite used in the Swift Boat Vets venomous TV ad? He clearly explains his source of the charges, and it's easy for even the dimmest bulb among us to see this has been wildly distorted for a Bush advantage in the ad.
It also explains that he threw over some medals for a couple of vets who couldn't make it to the demonstration, as well as a couple of his own ribbons. After hearing the entire explanation, no slow-witted, destructive right-winger could tell you he was flip-flopping on what it was he threw over, ("Was it ribbons or medals or did they belong to him or someone else?" you've heard them gibber, right?) and the ugly fallacies we've been seeing joyfully tossed about are illuminated clearly in this program, to the point it's easy to see some trolls have been working overtime on a disinformation program.
Whew!
If there's ANY justice, they'll show it at least 1% as many times as they have shown the Bush biography from before the 2000 election.
