36. only if you ignore his 2nd term
Even Jefferson was so mortified by his second term that he avoided any mention of being president on his epitaph.

It was the epitome of what bad second terms were all about. The Embrago Act pretty much cemented the pending war with Britain. It was enormously damaging to our economy and prestige.

He was much better as a writer and Secretary of State than he was as a president, although the first term gets marks for Louisiana and the subsequent Lewis & Clark expedition.

Civil rights, the Cold War, Vietnam, the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis.

9. Truman was the last great Democratic President
After him came the missle gap lies, the Viet Nam war, continuation of the anti-Castro bullshit, the Iran hostage (remember where the Shah went after he got kicked out?), the failure to pass universal health coverage, the failure to stand up to big business, and so on and so son and so forth.

It is a shame that the best thing we can say about our Party is that it is marginally better than the GOP. Mostly. Sort of.

I did get a kick out of the Big Dawg, though.

Edited on Mon Sep-06-04 06:41 PM by tx.lib
Pay attention to Carter? After all, he's sincere, he's a man of peace, he's a man who cares for the unfortunate, and a true, not a phony, Christian. If he wants attention, he should grovel to Big Oil, kow - tow Big Business, and brag about what a great Christian he is, while bashing gays and the less fortunate. And then he'll be "in like Flynn".

18. Clinton and Carter
Kennedy was not in there for a long enough time to match either, though I think he would have really turned this country around. Personal life aside, Clinton did a lot I admire. Despite the whole "bombing" situations we got ourselves into, he handled the domestic problems better than most did. Carter did a lot of humanitarian stuff I admire too. It's kind of a toss-up.

26. You left out Cleveland's second term
His fans would probably like to, as well :)

But out of the 19th century Democrats, he was the best. From what I know of Andrew Jackson, he was pretty horrible. Effective, but horrible. Most of the others were horrible and maudlin.

I voted for FDR. I actually don't like many Democratic Presidents.

24. Truman
because the buck stops at his desk.

ending WW2 and pushing for civil rights and universal health care. He had the balls to go against the very racist Democrats in his party.

I didn't pick FDR because of his blatant racism. But I respect him without liking him.

Why didn't you put Jefferson Davis, the democratic confederate president? I'm sure some people respect him while disagreeing with his policies of slavery and secession.

25. I didn't put Davis becasue he was C.S.A., not U.S.A.
Also, I can only fit ten options in a poll. That's why so many are in the "other" category.

An interesting point, though.

39. Davis had a very interesting life
After careful, but very, very brief reflection, I chose Roosevelt.

I think Davis did a more than competent job as Confederate President though. Give him the economic and military power that Lincoln had and give Lincoln what Davis had and I have no doubt he would have won quicker than Lincoln did.

He was really in a pretty impossible position, trying to make a government during a major war, and trying to rally support from states when the whole idea of the country was that the states should have supreme authority.

Hard working, uncorruptable, and chosen as president, a job he didn't want, he kept his country together and fighting even after it was split into pieces.

Read his biography. He had quite a life.

29. Truman- He wasn't afraid to stand up for what he believed in, despite the
fact that many people disagreed with his policies on Korea, the failed FAIR DEAL and the first pushes for civil rights laws (unless you count FDR's Anti-Lynching law)

30. LBJ, if not for Vietnam, would have been great
He passed many of the programs Kennedy envisioned, as well as two landmark civil rights acts (in 1964 and 1965). If LBJ had stayed the hell away from SE Asia, he very well have been remembered as even greater than FDR.

Without Vietnam, he could have been another FDR.

But, Vietnam happened, and escalated.

So it's FDR all the way for me.

I liked the way that JFK took responsiblity for the Bay of Pigs even though he had nothing to do with it. He was going to pull us out of Vietnam and to dismantle the CIA when he was killed.

40. while he wasn't busy re-segregating the military
Or hailing the portrayal of the Klan in "The Birth Of A Nation".

Or I may add, sending the Marines down to Central America on behalf of the United Fruit Company, setting a precedent for our Latin American policy which would persist through Bush I.

Wilson's rhetoric about democracy and his "Fourteen Points" were pure self-aggrandizing hypocritical hogshit.

He even fought womens' suffrage until he saw the writing on the wall, about the time of his stroke.

And don't even get me started on his deception about "He Kept Us Out Of War" as his 1916 campaign slogan.

Worst Democratic president of the 20th century, bar none.
