"Va. Inmate Executed After Appeal Rejected"

JARRATT, Va. (AP) - A man who killed an elderly woman with a metal can and a pair of scissors in a drunken attack eight years ago was executed Thursday by injection.

James Edward Reid, 58, was pronounced dead at Greensville Correctional Center at 9:12 p.m.

The intravenous line carrying the lethal dose of drugs was placed in Reid's upper groin because veins in his arms, where IV lines are usually placed, apparently had deteriorated from years of drinking.

It took medical technicians 12 minutes, three times longer than usual, to place the IV lines.

That you can't see straight, walk straight, or remember anything, I'm sure that you'll have the presence of mind to say, "Well, I better not beat this old lady with a can and stab her with a pair of scissors. After all, look what happened to James Reid!"

I mean, if they hadn't executed this guy, people would be stabbing old ladies right and left!

Deterrence my ass.

My condolences to BOTH families.

3. Unlike many on this board

I am a firm believer in the death penalty. If this guy did it, then he deserved what he got. Is it the old lady's fault he was drunk.

However, I feel sorry for his family.
