I think of the man who had broken from the shackles of racist hate, including the Nation of Islam. So when I think of Senator Byrd, I do not think of the stupid young man who belonged to a hate group ..... that's the culture he came from.

The Sothern Poverty Law Center is building a "wall of tolerance." My name is one of the many on it. My nephew was savagely attacked by a gang as racist and hateful as the KKK. I led the call for justice. Part of that is understanding the capacity for people to change. It's time for reconciliation among people, not for clinging to old grudges.

It's not like he's tried to wash it over and pretend it never happened. He is not a hypocrite, he is an honest man, one of the few we've got in the Capitol. When he was a teenager and didn't know any better he was involved with Klan activities; when he realized how wrong that was he has made public apologies and repudiations, and then dedicated many decades of his life fighting oppression and racial prejudice. Depending on where you grow up, there are many things you may fall into when young b/c of famliy and cultural influences; if you then overcome them and make yourself a better person, you are in my mind a stronger, more decent individual than someone who was raised with all the proper liberal values.

Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell, dressed as foolishly as Bush on the aircraft carrier, following Senator Byrd. In a traditional society, a leader would not get up and blather after an elder (a "wisdom keeper") has spoken about an issue involving the life and death struggle that our soldiers are involved in. How very strange.
