Anyone notice the proliferation of biblethumpers on reality shows?
Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 04:49 PM by Dover
I don't watch any of them regularly so this may not be an accurate view, but whenever I sit and watch any of them for even a few minutes there seems to be at least one or more contestants who are asking Jesus to help them win some competition or other. And I'm particularly disgusted when they reveal that God's ultimate forgiveness gives them carte blanc to commit all kinds of nasty deeds. The Amazing Race has had several like that on from what I can tell. And I've seen it on Big Brother, and Survivor......and what ever the other ones are called. And then to top things off, ABC aired a movie the other day that was sponsored by Billy Graham (the alternative to football, I guess). No wonder I and so many others have hovered around their computers rather than watching the mass propaganda-in-a-box.

My television set is quite old and I won't be replacing it.

1. Do they think
that God or Jesus really cares that they win that stupid contest?
They are fruit and nut cases.

to validate their existence and biases. It's very simplistic.

But my main point is that there are SO MANY of them on these shows!

for a couple of hours every sunday. It affects every aspect of their lives. I reluctantly sat through a 2 1/2 hour preach-a-thon today and I witnessed it first hand. It was dreadful. The pastor was sermonizing about lying and wouldn't you know he brought up Clinton's sex testimony as an example. I almost wreched. I coughed loudly and stared right at him almost daring him to talk about the pretender's lies. He didn't.

6. "God came through, I'm so blessed."
Look, whatever gets you through the night, but the thought that some god is up there saying I want 'Nikki and Hal' to win rather than 'Bud and Irma' or that he prefers East Montana Tech over Southern Idaho U. for a football game ("The Lord was on our side! We are so blessed!") is a pathetic concept to me.

3. I can't watch any of those shows but maybe they are a very
fast growing segment of the population. (I think the fundies are growing fast but I can't prove it...all I know is I see it in my own life, there just seems to be a lot more of them.)

4. I think it's all about creating that perception. But I don't think
it's true.

Amazing Race seasons and the contestants this time are the worst. The pretty boy/girl model couple who also happen to be Biblethumpers - sickening. Everytime they avoid elimination they make some inane comment that God wants them to win. Like God worries about reality show contestants doing crazy shit for big bucks.

While I enjoy the show because it literally spans the globe, I hate seeing how much most of the participants live up to the "ugly American" stereotype. No understanding of or any appreciation for the culture of the nations they visit. It's frequently wince inducing.

7. Funny you should mention this... I haven't
watched casual TV for MONTHS. Just news.

Yesterday, I took a break from DU and politics. I decided to do something "family" oriented and give my brain a break...I thought. I never turned the computer on at all that day. I cleaned up my surroundings a bit, cooked then sat down with family to watch the tube. BOY, has the television line up changed over time...pretty lousy programing I must say.. Anyway, hubby said there's a movie on at such and such a time. I got my goodies ready and found my seat in front room.

I'll be dipped if the the "movie" wasn't a Billy Graham Presents thing!! I nearly tossed my cookies. Not only that but the movie was DRIPPING with come to Jesus rhetoric through and through. I tried to change the show to something else...........BUT nothing else was on worth watching!--->again, the lousy television programing thing.

WHAT THE HELL AM I PAYING FOR ANYWAY?! WE PAY for cable to be strung into this house and what do we get.....ADVERTISING and "empty" programing. DISGUSTING... :grr:

10. I do watch several of the reality show...ok I'm a numb nut.
But after a grueling day, they are so mindless they are relaxing for me. But Dover is right. Of the 3 show I watch, Big Brother and Amazing Race had evangelical contestants/cast members. I have no gripe with anyone's religion, but I cannot believe how these people use their religion to justify their actions. One Big Brother segment actually had a female contestant tell another one that she had to choose them to be eliminated because God told her it was the right thing to do. The show constantly show them referring to their bibles as they have to make different decisions throughout the season. It would be funny if it wasn't so ridiculous.
