I used to work in radio, and still keep up on it.
Looking at the ratings on AllAccess.com (free subscription required), I see that KCTE (1510) doesn't even show up in the ratings. Looks to be primarily a sports station, with Imus (sign of a very low-rated station), some ESPN hosts (Dan Patrick is pretty good, IMO) and some local hosts. But it's a daytime station, meaning it goes off the air at sunset and comes back on at dawn. These kind of stations rarely get any ratings action.
Here's a listing of local stations at this link:
http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/locate?select=city&city=kansas+city&state=mo&sid=&x=0&y=0Looking at it, I see:
WIBW (580) - Talk station out of Topeka (66 miles away, but it looks like the signal carries well into the KC market). Local hosts and second-tier syndicated talkers like Glenn Beck and Phil Hendrie.
KCSP (610) - All sports. This one seems to get pretty good ratings.
KFEQ (680) - St. Joseph station. RW talk and farm reports.
KCMO (710) - looks to be the big talk station in town. Decent ratings.
760, 1030, 1090, 1380, 1410 - Religious stations
WHB (810) - Sports. Gets great ratings. People must like sports in KC. Sister station to 1510.
KGGN (890), KPRT (1590) - Gospel. 890 is a daytime signal.
KMBZ (980) - This looks to be the dominant talk station in town.
KCXL (1140) - This looks like the weirdest talk station I've ever seen:
http://www.kcxl.comKPHN (1190) - Disney. These stations are always a waste. Nobody listens.
KKHK (1250), KCZZ (1480) - Spanish
KCKN (1340) - All-comedy radio? Very obscure. I'll bet this thing doesn't even draw flies.
KXTR (1660) - Classical on AM? I'm shocked it has listeners.
Here's some info about AAR and KC, from last April:
http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:ZiBr-aRTDR4J:www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/entertainment/8341054.htm%3F1c+KCKN-AM&hl=enAnd, the big money question: Who's desperate enough to pick up AAR (usually seems to be the reason to flip any AM)? My money's on KCKN, which looks like it gets no ratings with comedy and minor league sports. According to the article, the guy seems to like AAR.
The big talk stations will never pick up AAR, so scratch off KMBZ, WHB and KCMO.
I'd say no on the out-of-towners as well. That's farm radio there.
Forget the religious, gospel and spanish stations. There's money in those formats.
And Disney doesn't care how much money they lose with Radio Disney. Just a complete waste of a signal.
KCXL is way out there. Looks like a bunch of conspiracy nuts and new agers. Alex Jones is on the schedule. 'Nuff said. I'll bet it's a somewhat interesting station to listen to.
Entercom owns a few of these AM signals, and just flipped their Rochester, NY station to AAR. They own the classical station at 1660, but I'm not sure how much money they make. Ratings aren't bad.
Surest bet would be the comedy station. This guy will get tired of losing money.
All-in-all, looks like a decent market. Lots of small owners, no Clear Channel, and only a few bigger players (Entercom and Susquehanna, with Infinity having a small presence here). And NO Clear Channel!
