1. Hey, proud patriot
I wonder what Randi alluded to about Patti while she was playing her song? Patti Smith make a pass at her?

2. Sounds like Patti and Randi didn't quite get along . . .
The dangers of not screening your guests or talking with them ahead of time. I don't suppose I can blame Randi for wanting someone she thought was admirable on her show, but you gotta get the ground rules set out ahead of time.

4. For those who missed it yesterday, a great account from her board:
Randi Rhodes vs Patty Smith yesterday - best account:
QUOTE (heinrich @ Sep 30 2004, 01:22 AM)
My impressions of Randi's and Patti's "discussion" -- after listening to it three times -- favors Randi. But let's let the facts guide us by looking at the timing of the dialogue in the first nine minutes or so:
First 30 seconds: Patti's music is played
Next 40: Randi praises Patti
Next 20: Randi starts to make a case that the music should have improved after W's war
Next 65: Patti interrupts before Randi can finish her point, and has misinterpreted Randi's point
Next 157: Randi riffs on W selling fear and the takeover of media by corporations
Next 96: Patti makes the point how Iraq infrastructure has been destroyed
Next 29: Randi amplifies Patti's point with specific detail
Next 19: Patti's notes that people are not asking questions.
Next 29: Rand and Patti go back and forth on corporate influence; Patti praises Nader; Randi criticizes Nader
Next 12: Patti rebuts Randi with "That's not true" and "That's a very glib statement"
Next 58: Randi gives her Prada shoe analogy, says Nader had done some great things, but that he's changed.
Next 10: Patti says she doesn't agree and "I don't want to argue with you on your show," to which Randi good-naturedly say's "Oh, come on (giggle)"
At this point, Patti says to Randi "Your point is narrow," accuses Randi of talking 90% of the time, and dismisses Randi with "If you really want to talk to me about Ralph Nader in any meaningful way, we can do it afterwards."
If you add up the amount of time each spoke during the first nine minutes or so, counting 29 seconds where it was going back and forth evenly, you get 261 seconds for Patti and 333 seconds for Randi, which means Patti (and her song) had 44% of the air time and Randi had 56%. This is actually a pretty even balance up to the point Patti accuses Randi of monopolizing 90% of the air time.
Also, the conversation was very civil until Patti said "That's a very glib statement," which is a putdown of Randi. Even then, Randi remained polite.
After Randi, in all good humor, encouraged Patti to argue the facts, Patti returns with "Your point is narrow," which is again an insulting putdown to Randi, and then the "If you really .. . in any meaningful way .. ." which is downright rude and condescending to Randi.
Up to this point, Randi had been very agreeable and very open in allowing Patti to make her point.
After this, the gloves were off and I think Patti's stonewalling and refusal to engage in the debate reflects poorly on her. Yes, Randi got passionate and probably stayed on the Nader point too long. But she had every justification. Patti should have done her homework before coming on the show, and should have been more polite.

20. Thanks so much
I was busy and didn't realize how the conversation got off on Nader. I didn't know who started it.

What's funny is Randi seems to be totally forgetting the call from Lars Larson right after P. Smith. She used all her frustration on him. It was great.

32. Randi doesn't seem as optimistic about Nov 2
as she did before. She used to say Kerry would win in a "landslide!" which always comforted me. Today she says "I can't believe we're loosing to these people!"

What's up with that? I think we will win...and I wonder what information Randi has that has changed her outlook.

33. Wasn't she making a reference to what Jon Levitt (sp?)
said in an SNL skit where he played Dukakis debating an inarticulate Dana Carvey as Bush I?

In that skit, Carvey's Bush babbles incoherently in response to a question and Levitt looks deadpan into the camera and says:

"I can't believe I'm losing to this guy." Or something like that.

I'm only half listening, but that's the impression I had.

15. Did she bring up Lars Larson calling her yet?
Larson called her to gloat about her and Smith not getting along. He was trhe last call of her show last night. He said something like..."Sure is fun to hear you get yours from a fellow leftist, Randi" or something like that. She would have none of it, and said that he's a BIG loser in Portland talk radio and she's kicking his ass in the ratings, and his gun is just a penis extension.

I loved it. She brought his call up yet?

I'm surprised Lars had the stones to call Randi. Of course, it was only when he perceived that she would be down about the Patti Smith debacle.

I'd pay a dollar to watch Randi and Lars in a steel cage death match.

21. I Always Thought Patti Smith Was Weird & Overrated
I'm sorry but I remember working in the record business when her big hit came out. Arista records shoved cocaine up the noses of many a programmers to get them to play Because The Night and marketed her as a mystical guru.

I never understood the big deal over her.

22. Wow
Randi mentioned that something happened off air (while Patti's music was playing) that was strange, but she wasn't going to talk about it. That combined with her plea that Patti gets some help really makes me wonder. It sounds like she's more upset about Patti's general state rather than a disagreement about political viewpoints.

I have to admit I hit the mute button half way through the interchange because I hate shouting matches, and Randi's voice had started to go up. I understood her frustration and agreed with her points, but I avoid shouting match talk shows because they drive me bats. Anyway, it sounds like something other than Patti's views were 'off' yesterday to upset Randi that much - that, and Scott M.'s death.

 to Randi.

26. "Kerry is a skilled and knowledgeable debater"
Bush mantra. Of course, the way Bush wins the debate is the post-debate looping of every "uh" every misspeak, every fumble by Kerry, which the networks will be more than happy to do.

Being completely out of touch with reality is a good thing, because no one can break through on your happy alternate insane idiot world.

If the Massachusetts governor race can have seven debates, can't we have a couple more than three for the presidency of the whole freakin' country?

Just require a pre-debate physical, and Bush won't show up.

28. Going through the rules of the debate
This isn't a debate -- there's no spontaneous give-and-take. No rebuttals, no cross-questions, no interaction. If someone lies his ass off, it's up to Jim Lehrer to pose a follow-up.

The media has finally manufactured exactly what they like. Everything will come in one minute sound bites -- they don't even need an editor anymore.

29. The "debates" are an unconscionable fraud
It is actually illegal for the candidates to participate in a debate other than that sponsored by the independent (sic) nonpartisan (sic) debate (sic) commission under their ridiculous rules. The candidates can't debate outside the strictures, even if they wanted to!

Incredible.

If you're up in the polls, you don't need debates, which is why the Bushistas insisted on such restrictive rules.

Edited on Thu Sep-30-04 03:49 PM by Ravenswood
They touched on several topics - Clinton talked about how Bush wants to control everything, especially press conferences, and pointed out that he never answers questions anymore and never makes public appearances that aren't scripted. I believe she used the phrase "Bush lives in a bubble." (Reminded me of a post on here nicknaming Bush "Bubble Boy" recently.)
