Lay Off Patti Smith
She's entitled to her opinions. She paid her dues for them. Gods bless her. (You really want to start Dixie Chicking, folks?)

And, glad you labeled it "Stalinist"

It's time we ALL do some thinking about the world we're building.

35. Randi tried to bait her into an argument over her past (and
most likely current) support of Nader, Patti didnt want to "go there" and Randi wouldn't let up and it got ugly. So DUers are hissing over Patti because she isn't falling in line.

40. You mean she didn't actually say who she's voting for this year?
And people are angry with her and think she needs help because she didn't want to get into with Randi?

24. I'm endorsing that DUers not turn themselves into freepers
over Patti Smith's Nader vote. If you don't like her support of Nader, fine. Say so. But don't attack her art and mental health over it.

26. Fair enough. I don't like her support of Nader
Because i think it is simplistic and Utopian. I also think it is stupid because he claims to be Green Party then accepts money from Republicans...that is a Republican.

Can we still make fun of Georgie's apparent mental problems? I usually don't like that, but in this case his insanity affects THE WHOLE FUCKING WORLD, so I am making an exception.

27. Nader is not claiming to be Green Party this year.
The Greens have disowned him. They're advocating strategic voting this year--sincerely, unlike last election. They're advocating voting for John Kerry, even if you're a Green, in battleground states. Nader, on the other hand, is trying to get on the ballot in battleground states.

I totally disagree with Smith on her vote. But she'll be casting it in New York, where it won't make much of a difference.

33. In 2000, yes it was. This year the Greens didn't bite.
In 2000, they wanted his star power. In 2004, though he ran for their nomination, they went with a different kind of pragmatism offered by their less than stellar but eminently pragmatic nominee (whose name, I unironically, forget).

11. Message to Patti: Nader Voters Help Bush
and I thought she was so smart.... Ha!!!

As I said in another thread, I worked in the record biz when her first big hit came out. Arista records spent a fortune promoting her - that was during the days when a couple grams of coke went far with a program director at a station. Free trips and tons of product...
Stations that would normally not touch "because the night" were playing it. Payola was alive and well in the late 70's.

21. How is either point relevant to this discussion?
We were talking about the the election. You're talking about KISS and payola in the 1970s. :eyes:

As far as this election is concerned, I don't believe Nader is going to be a factor at all in this election. I think sufficient numbers of Nader 2000 voters have moved to the ABB = JFK camp. I may be wrong. But I believe people still have the right to vote for whomever they want to. And Patti Smith's vote for Nader in NY (where I also live) is going to make about as much noise as a sigh in Times Square.

What I really object to is that certain partisans on this board have lowered themselves to make the kind of ad hominem attacks against Smith that Republicans make against artists whom they politically disagree with. Randi Rhodes doesn't like Patti Smith's loyalty to Nader so she orders her listeners to think Patti Smith "needs help?" What kind of shit is that? Let the right have their talk radio gasbag gurus. Let them have their Dixie Chickers. We ought to be better than that.

When an artist says something they disagree with, they attack that person's work, which has precisely zip to do with their political views. Patti Smith is a true American artist.

39. sometimes the personal is the political and vice versa
Patti has raised a lot of "conscsiousness" - personal and political over the yeats. I didn't hear the radio interview, so I can't speak to what was said. I don't agree with her alleged support for Nader, but there are many people who feel that some of Nader's policies fit their vision of the world better. I respect Patti's art and her right to have a different political opinion even if I don't agree with it. Ad hominem arguments are rarely useful.

Since the DLC worked so hard to keep Nader off the ballots, DUers are going to have an awfully hard time using Ralph as the "spoiler" boogeyman for another four years.
