Judith Miller ordered jailed!
Edited on Thu Oct-07-04 01:52 PM by Equipoise
Adding things as I Tivo back. (I love Tivo)

I just heard it on MSNBC.

NYT reporter Judith Miller...

She remains free...

Federal Judge holding her in contempt.

For refusing to divulge a confidential source.

Stupid MSNBC talking head said "Ambassador George Wilson"

Dumb bitch just said "Victoria Plam"

If they don't have fact-checkers, you'd think someone there would be up on the case enough to know the names invovled.

US. District Judge Thomas Hogan (is that his name?) ordered her jailed until she agrees to testify about her sources before the grand jury, but that she could remain free while persuing an appeal.

She could be jailed up to 18 months.

Lawyer on the show (MSNBC talking head, not one involved) said "The special prosecutor tried every other way to get that information but they couldn't so contempt was the last resort.

That's it.

3. For refusing to cooperate?
It can't be for allowing herself to be used by Ahmed Chalabi and the PNACers, though that ought to be a crime too.

Edited on Thu Oct-07-04 02:01 PM by BurtWorm
They think of Miller as a brave sister protecting her sources, so screw the people her sources harmed (on behalf of the government, I might add).

12. She belongs in jail, all right--but not for that.
Surely, colluding to mislead the American people about an illegal war should warrant some kind of jail time...

17. Who could have expected this turn?
She wouldn't have dreamed it was possible when she was in Afghanistan, ordering officers around, and threatening to make trouble for them with her Washington contacts if they didn't bow to her demands.

Thank ya, Jeezus!

18. I'm torn about this development.
Alll things being equal, mind you ....

Journalists have an obligation to protect confidential sources. However, Miller has not exactly been a bastion of fairness in reporting, to say the least. I, and many others, would sure be interested in knowing what she knows ...

23. not me ... this is different
in any normal situation, i would agree that we need to aggressively protect a free press ... and her outrageous whoring for bush in Iraq is not a sufficient reason to jail her ...

HOWEVER, it does not seem credible to me to argue for the importance of confidential sources when the case at hand is the outing of confidential sources ... the Plame affair is "high treason", a crime punishable by death ... the press cannot "out" a CIA agent and then hide behind the importance of confidential sources ... that is hypocrisy I am not willing to endorse ...

26. Adding To Your Thought
Do we want confidential sources in the gov't that are committing felonies for political purposes? Exactly what is Miller protecting here? The ability for gov't officials to commit crimes without fear of consequences.

This is not at all a first ammendment issue. The people she's "protecting" have committed a crime. If sources like that dry up, good! We don't want people like that in or near the seats of power.

She'll sit there patiently, waiting on the Administration to send her a cake w/ a file in it.

"Steno Judy in the Big House". Sounds like a Russ Meyer film.
