.S. Alerts Schools About Terror Threat

2 hours, 10 minutes ago U.S. National - AP

By BEN FELLER, AP Education Writer

WASHINGTON - The Education Department has advised school leaders nationwide to watch for people spying on their buildings or buses to help detect any possibility of terrorism like the deadly school siege in Russia.

The warning follows an analysis by the FBI (news - web sites) and the Homeland Security Department of the siege that killed nearly 340 people, many of them students, in the city of Beslan last month.

"The horror of this attack may have created significant anxiety in our own country among parents, students, faculty staff and other community members," Deputy Education Secretary Eugene Hickok said in a letter to schools and education groups.

The safety advice is based on lessons learned from the Russia incident. But there is "no specific information indicating that there is a terrorist threat to any schools or universities in the United States," Hickok said.

Federal law enforcement officials also have encouraged local police to stay in contact with school officials and have encouraged reporting of suspicious activities, the letter says.

6. Exactly, it's just plain wrong to scare the children at election time but
not when we were actually under siege! Think about the children Mr. Bush, you've stood on the back of gays, women and now children? Have you NO SHAME!

3. Maybe I'm just stupid, but
Aren't school leaders always watching for people that spy, watch, loiter around or otherwise pay too much attention to, their schools? They have pedophiles and kidnappers and drug dealers and gangbangers to look out for already, right? This seems soooooo senseless.

Be afraid! Be afraid!

10. We always do.
And we've actually led to the arrest of some - had a crack house down the street from one of our schools that an asst. principal turned in. So we are paying attention. But to raise the specter of terrorism is not at all helpful.

5. What they really should have said:
"The horror of this attack may have created significant anxiety in our own country and is the perfect tool to use to bolster a desperate, backsliding Chimp campaign. There is no specific information indicating that there is a terrorist threat to any schools or universities in the United States, but just in case...BOO!"

7. "People staring at or quickly looking away from employees or vehicles..."
"...as they enter or leave parking areas."

So beware of people who are looking at you or not looking at you! They could be terra-ists!
