My best friend doesn't want to vote for Kerry.
She adores Kerry, and says she will vote for Kerry, but says she has no hope or enthusiasm.

Why?

She says it doesn't matter because Bush will cheat because he will HAVE to cheat. She says that IF the election were fair (and she says it will not be) of course Kerry would win. But she contends that Bush WILL cheat, therefore there's no reason to even hope Kerry will win because Bush won't let it happen.

Anything I can tell her? I am so excited, but I hate to say I do agree with her to an extent...

1. Kerry has to win by such a margin
that it's impossible to hide a cheat! :bounce:

and we don't expect Kerry to bail out on us, why should we bail out on him?

3. That's what I'm hoping...
That turnout will be SOO huge that cheating won't matter. And I'm automatically suspicious of any shady goings-on after 2000.

2. They ARE going to cheat,
They are already doing it. The differance, this time, is that we are on to them, and we are not going to let them get away with it.

25. Amen to that!
I think we've all learned that there can be no more complacency. After the whole fiasco in 2000, I thought, "Oh well, what can I do." Oh, if only we'd have all known what we were in for.

4. Easy,
The further ahead that Kerry is in votes the harder it becomes to "cheat" . Have her get 3 more folks primed to vote for Kerry - and ask he to have them get 3 more folks primed to vote for kerry and so on, and exponentially the impact of that first (not just her vote, but her effort to get more votes) grows. If we get a big enough margin - it is "cheat proof."

5. Tell her that much tougher adversaries than Bush
have been beaten in history. She can make a difference by voting. And voting takes very little effort. If she does not vote, it simply means she is full of it, basically.

6. Tell her the world does not owe her a fair election - she has to
go out and earn one. She is acting like a child, an irresponsible child. One who expects the adults to take care of her instead of taking personal responsibility. Grow up.

how could you live with yourself?

9. She assured me she will vote...
And she WILL vote because I will make her... ;)

But she just insists that they will cheat and all our hard work and votes won't matter. I told her I felt the same way and that's why I do something everyday to kick Bush out. One can only expect the Repukes to cheat because they always have and always will play dirty and bend the rules (if not outright cheat).

Is it better to give up without even bothering to vote?
WTF?
He may very well cheat, in fact I think it's already happening. But quit before the game starts?
You have got to be kidding me.

12. I agree
I predict if Bush "wins" there will be major, major civil unrest. There are A LOT of very angry people in this country; I'm one of them.

It will be time the blue states secede from the US. :grr:

18. LOL ... Are you serious? Americans are far too timid.
Very little, if anything, will happen.

You see, far too many folks still believe in the ridiculous farce that is our electoral and governmental processes. Nevermind, their government has failed them time and time again ... it doesn't matter.

To admit that something has gone seriously wrong, could mean perhaps *everything* has gone wrong. They are so emotionally invested in the illusion, they are forced to ignore the obvious. The alternative is a complete system failure. Your average American does not want to see, because living in denial is far easier. Paralysed by fear, soothed by the idiot box.

13. Well, I don't want to vote for Kerry either
but not for the same reasons she states. (WTF?? Kinda silly if you ask me -- you pays your money, you takes your chances. She can help Bush "win" because a suppressed voter turnout definitely helps when you're cheating. Does she want to do that, HELP Bush successfully cheat?)

Anyway, I'm not excited about him at all, but I'm going to suck it up and do the right thing. Tell her to get her rear in gear, suck it up and do the right thing too, dammit. (Damn, now I'm all depressed thinking about that damn vote I have to make. Shit.)

She feels powerless about a lot of aspsects in her life, so it's really a much bigger issue than the election.

16. "doesn't want to" but "will vote for Kerry"? what's the problem?
voting for Kerry won't actually help Bush get elected, so it won't harm to try.

19. I think we all feel that way, but
we still need to get out there and vote so that Kerry wins by a landslide. That way it will be much harder for Bush to steal another election.

26. We have to make it as hard as possible for them to steal it
And that means voting, and that means voting with enthusiasm, and that means getting all our family, friends, and neighbors to vote with enthusiasm as well.

They cannot steal it if they are swamped in a landslide. And they will have a very hard time stealing it, even if it is close.

We will not be caught sleeping again, like we were last time around.

20. Not Gonna Vote...Two Dummies..
Edited on Wed Oct-13-04 06:50 AM by SudieJD
While at the local "tiny town" grocery store the other day a couple of "air-head" girls, were saying that they've never voted and their not gonna start now. UGH!

I piped in that a lot of people gave up their lives so that THEY COULD VOTE! No matter who they vote for, for gods sake, VOTE! DUH!

21. Well, if she has no hope or enthusiasm, she should have
defiance and righteous anger. Tell her to think of the people Bush has victimized and the others he would victimize in the future if he got back in and do it for those people. There are so many.

She will at least know she tried to do what she could. Americans are the only ones in the position to do anything to get rid of him right now. There are people in the world, children, old people and so on, who are powerless to stop bombs from coming down on their heads. If Bush follows the neo-cons, and we know he will if he gets back in, we know they have more plans for other countries.

Two of my oldest friends intend to vote for Ralph Nader and for Green Party candidate David Cobb respectively. Good thing we live in a blue state!

28. I know a good way to fight her pessimism.
Get involved.

If she donated some time to phone banking, door-to-door canvassing, letter-writing, or other political activities, she would be a lot more hopeful.

I'm glad she's not letting her negativity stop her from voting, but she'd be a lot happier if she got active instead of sat around moping. If nothing else, it would give her something to do and a way to meet others (besides you) who are on the same side politically. Maybe you could BOTH sign up together.
