They ought to put it on big billboards all over the country. Conservatives (on MSRNC) are offended when this is brought up, and yet Repugs. wave the issue all over the place and make it a central point of discussion for their religious base. They are truly offensive.

1. I am torn on this
on one hand she is fair game as a public figure who is openly gay, but on the other hand it may turn off moderates when we seem to be "outing" her. (which we are not--she has been out for years--but not all people know that). Obviously internal polling must have indicated this would be a good idea--because both Edwards and Kerry brought it up. So hopefully it will help us.

2. it does have some shock value--people aren't used to hearing the L word
especially out of the mouths of leaders...

fine, good, better to get over the initial shock.

What I think is even better is by saying it openly, Kerry and Edwards put a human face on those at the recieving end of the discrimination that this fucking admin perpetrates behind phony and vague words of inclusiveness.

12. the only people who don't know it are the ones that need to know it.
fundies.

Rita Mae Brown wrote in "Rubyfruit Jungle" that "I bet even the Chinese don't want their queers."

We can't let them get away with playing both sides of this issue.

14. Any "moderate" who would be "turned off"
Edited on Thu Oct-14-04 12:58 AM by Kipepeo
by her "outing" (which is a LIE: She's been OUT for years)would be MORE "turned off" by finding out that Cheney's daughter is gay in the first place.

I'm sorry, but I think if someone is so prejudiced as to think talking about her as a (gasp) lesbian is a No-No thay are also inclined to think her BEING a (gasp) lesbian in the first place is a bigger No-No.

You court the prejudice vote, you get some prejudice. You reap what you sow. Screw you Bush Cheney (and an especial 'Screw You' to Cheney, who sacrifices his daughter for power).

3. And using the word "lesbian" rather than "gay" was tactically brilliant
The "L word" resonates with the otherness that freaks a significant portion of Bush's base. It was not intended for us or moderates, but instead, to soften some of Bush's support by bigots. Nothing is going to make them more accepting, so one may as well demoralize them.
John Kerry is a very smart man

5. Is it SOMETHING TO BE ASHAMED OF????
Damn!
:grr:

Minor disclaimer: I'm "hopelessly" straight. I don't find that to be anything more or less to be kept UNMENTIONED than Mary Cheney being a lesbian.

7. "Is it SOMETHING TO BE ASHAMED OF????"
You have to look at how it played to the right wing nazi nuts who HATE homosexuals. If they project that hate to Bush/Cheney, the nuts might just stay home and shave their heads...get it? Because Bush/Cheney really LOVE lesbians as much as they don't want to admit it.

10. Get a load of this....
My partner just informed me that Mary Cheney, not only works for her father, but the Republican party is actually capitalizing on her lesbian status by having her go out and speak to gay groups to persuade them to vote for Bush and Cheney. (She started out as liason for a gay and lesbian employee group at Coors, having been a vocal activist for years). The religious base really should know about this, don't you think?

11. Exactly.
These bastards want to hypocritically capitalize on their own daughter's sexual orientation -- both by USING her to get votes and ATTACKING Kerry for mentioning her.

The presstitutes pander to the unthinking Amurikan sheeple by presuming that "lesbian" is an insult ... something to be ashamed of and Kerry is somehow attacking her. It's fucking disgusting how evil these people are.

The ones EXPLOITING her are the Cheneys themselves! They HIDE BEHIND THEIR CHILDREN. Just like Dumbyashit hid behind his daughters when he claimed he didn't want them to know about his DUI convictions. Just like Jerk-off hid behind children in an elementary school on 9/11.
