Bush Imperializes Lincoln Bedroom with Huge Golden Crown
Whatever Election Day holds for her husband, Laura Bush is about to establish her own White House legacy in a bold transformation of the Lincoln Bedroom.

When completed later this fall, the nation's most famous guest room will retain the celebrated rosewood bed bought by Mary Todd Lincoln in 1861 as its centerpiece. Flamboyant rococo revival furniture by renowned cabinetmaker John Henry Belter will remain. And a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation, which was signed in the room in 1863, will still be available for late-night perusal, in a glass case on a polished antique desk.

Two elaborate cornices such as might have topped windows in Lincoln's day have been carved and sent to the gilders. An opulent white marble mantel was commissioned to better complement a rococo-style mirror installed last summer.

The pièce de résistance, both decoratively and symbolically, will be a carved bed canopy in the shape of a crown. It too has been sent for gilding. When affixed to the ceiling, the crown will support yards of regal purple satin over white lace, both trailing to the floor.

White House curator William Allman, who detailed the project Thursday at a White House Historical Association symposium on the decorative arts, describes the decor as "back for the future."

I know it's not new, but I thought it was interesting.

6. naw, I bet they bought the props from an old "Burger King" commercial!
I never would have thought I'd see such a thing installed in the bedroom of an American President. Lincoln must be rolling in his grave!

2. Christ! How tacky can that woman get?
A Moonie crown and yards of purple satin and lace? Good grief. That sounds downright whorehouse-ish.

Please, somebody make Laura give up interior desecration.

3. disgusting
and we are paying for a "crown" to be placed over this bed?

Crown? In this democracy?

This is just plain waste of taxpayer money squandered on poor, crass , bordello like taste that someone, most likely Laura, thinks is classy. It is an assumed opulence, mistaken for taste and class, that seems to be all show and no substance--but what else from a Bush?

5. It is my understanding that Bush intends to sleep there

Correct me if I am mistaken, Salon had a piece about it too, sorry, don't have link, but I think that is the reason for the royal purple and crown.

7. And people thought Saddam's palace was self-aggrondizing... what a wa$te!
Sheesh. She is such an obnoxious snotty cow who feels taxpayer money should pay for a BIG CROWN (to compensate for her hubby's small penis)?
