Did Tucker Carlson ruin his career with his Crossfire performance?
I think THAT's the real question this morning.

Jon Stewart only elevated his career but _ucker? He was openly ridiculed and his attempts at comebacks sank him deeper.

Can CNN continue to promote a 'political' anchor who is the object of such open derision?

Will _ucker be able to take the stage and be laughed at--before he even opens his mouth?

Will political 'heavyweights' want to be represented by his shallow, whining schick?

we'll see...

11. you're right, tucker was
humiliated. but in a few days it will all be forgotten by most (most being an admittedly small number considering Crossfire's ratings). cnn will just plow forward as if nothing happened, continuing their mary cheney fetish and ignoring the bush/osama lie.

13. It was devastatimg.
I thought it was one of the best things that I've seen on tv -- ever!
Through the years, many people have noted that the media has become a big business that no longer serves its intended purpose. To have the ability to confront two of the biggest names in the game was awesome.

3. He'll forever by perceived as a grown man who dresses like Charlie Mcarthy
Getting derided by Stewart was one thing. Not fighting back, fighting back lamely and even fawning were even worse. Maybe if he ceremoniously burned his bowtie and went "bollo", all on pay per view, he could be redeemed.

25. What is the bowtie supposed to signify anyway?
Conservatives pundits like George Wilt wears them - what does it mean?

Someone told me it's a status symbol, meaning the person wearing the bowtie never had a sore back from a honest day's work in their life. Is the bowtie some sort of symbol for the leisure class? Or is it supposed to make them look like intellectuals? I really don't get it?

30. Never see big dudes wearing bowties unless they are chippendale dancers..
As far as little guys wearing them... I am in NYC, right now and see a fair share of smarmy bowtie wearers. Mostly older guys, sometime with beards, often effiminate or at least soft. It's a nerdy, intellectual, bookwormy effect, a throwback to amore civil time. I think it makes them all look like waiters, or worse, like Jimmy Olson.

5. Well, his credibility took a big hit
But then it was Jon Stewart's point that credibility doesn't matter any more.
The less it matters the more a Tucker thrives; but this has always been the case.
The larger question is whether Jon Stewart is going to start a revolution that is going to shame the News Media into doing its job.
In such a case, Tucker might prove to be the temporary fall guy.
But he'll be back. Bow ties always seem to make a comback.

They are mentioning Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter every few minutes, but I have not heard them refer to this show at all....Hmmmm

12. Tucker "dick" Carlson is still sitting slack jawed
in his chair wondering that the hell happened...Begala had the sense to finally shut up and probably slinked out of the studio with his head down.

Mr. Bow Tie, true to form, gave Jon even more ammo when he displayed his "TDS softball Kerry questions" as proof that Stewart isn't as 'hard hitting' as Misfire, missing the point that TDS is NOT pretending to be a real news program. Jon correctly pointed out that Tucker's show styles itself a news program and is nothing but 'partisan hackery' - my favorite quip of the entire exchange.

14. Nah, hacks like Carlson will always have a home, so long as they
shamelessly stick to the corporate script. If credibility mattered, Novak would be unemployed.

15. You know it is funny
I totally agree with Jon Stewart but I think Tucker was really good and I think Jon Stewart was not his best. I seldom agree with Tucker Carlson butI think he does more harm to Bush than help. The "Bush is Evil" statement is an example.
I consider myself a liberal but I also agreed that Jon Stewart is funnier on his show. The sentiment that CNN has not asked Bush the questions they should of is true. But the one show I like on CNN is Crossfire because Paul Begala always gets the best of the right-winger. But that is just me.

24. Are you saying I don't have the right to an opinion?
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 12:43 PM by vinnievin777
I can have the opinion that John Stewart didn't perform well. I totally agree with his sentiment and I expressed it many times. But I watch his show which I love and I saw him on crossfire. And quite frankly he was not at his best to put it mildly on crossfire.
Congratulations you earned yourself a Bush face for not respecting other people's opinions.

28. Listen, it isn't a matter of his being funny, or Tucker doing a better job
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 12:58 PM by Vickers
That wasn't the POINT. Tucker didn't get the point until it was too late, and then was inneffective ("Kerry's butt boy" ... :wtf:) in his rebuttal (no pun intended).

It's a matter of somebody as POPULAR and WELL-LIKED and RESPECTED and INFLUENTIAL as Jon Stewart completely lambasting two of the most pitiful, weak sock-puppets to ever appear on TV.

I apologize for comparing you to Tucker. That was uncalled for.

Sincerely,

Vickers

19. I think John Stewart's point was more subtle than Begala and Carlson
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 11:21 AM by Cat Atomic
recognized. They repeatedly protested, 'you're saying we're too soft, and then you're saying we're too rough'.

But Stewart wasn't saying either of those things, precisely. He was saying that their whole presentation is just stage craft. It's the corporate-approved "debate" of the day. They squabble over the day's talking points, as defined by politicians and corporate big-wigs, and completely ignore the real news.

And THAT'S what's so damaging. There IS NO debate on the real issues in the mainstream media. There's no mention of relelvant news at all in the mainstream media.

16. CNN has become a right wing HACK
Its trying to out fox FOX. Loosing its true supporters. I dont want an all Democrat TV channel, and I sure as heck dont want an all Republican channel like FOX.

Why cant CNN be down the middle. Im sick of the hacks like NOVAK. In fact I turn off the TV when he is hosting crossfire.
