Franken should lose the ditto head
I've been listening to AAR's Al Franken Show and the ditto head segment has been, at best, only marginally entertaining.
Al: Here's Rush lying again
<audio clip>
dittohead: Well yeah, he is lying but here's why he's lying...

Me: YAAAAAAAAWN

I guess he demostrates how illogical and out of touch ditto heads are, but on a daily basis? Maybe once a week

I'm really getting tired of this segment. There's a reason I don't listen to Rush......

I enjoy the show but this segment and sometimes on Friday when he has the interviews from the BBQ place in Georgia.

2. I couldn't agree with you more.
It might be mildly amusing on a weekly basis, but to have that ditto-sheep bleat out Rush's idiotic nonsense on a daily basis is too much to take.

I have successfully severed all ties with any Rush listeners I have had in my real life so I can avoid that kind of stupidity. I'd rather not get a daily dose of it on AAR. :puke:

4. I agree- I think Franken has proven his point, and the ditto head
is just annoying now. It's clear that he *knows* Limbaugh is lying. He just doesn't care.

6. thirsty horse?
at first, it seemed like a good idea ya know. Take some one who is intelligent and a friend of Als and keep showing him time after time instances of Rush lying and distorting the truth and Mark just doesn't care.

Its pathetic ...I that old saying is true; you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink!

sigh...

15. I was kind of hoping he'd eventually come around.
You know, like an October Surprise that the dittohead finally realized the error of his ways and decided to vote for Kerry. But obviously he is set in his ways. Too bad. Al Franken is a better person than I am - I would've cut this guy out of my life long before now.

16. my conservative friend
a buddy of mine who is conservative (though he calls himself independent) argues with me all the time. We have done it in a friendly way for years but now it just all seems so personal.

I don't see how someone can still cling to such weak arguments as school vouchers when there is a war on!

It's really sad to think that a friend of mine is also like Mark. A few weeks ago I told him that we can't talk politics anymore. So frustrating!

20. You can lead a horse to water...

This well known saying reminds me of another.

Dorothy Parker, well before her time, won fame for her witty conversation and literary criticism. In her short stories she examined the hypocrisy of society while showing compassion for its victims.

During the 1920s she belonged to the Algonquin Round Table, a group of famous writers who met regularly at the Alogonquin Hotel in NYC. She became known for her quick-witted quips. When she was told that President Coolidge had died, she asked, "How could you tell?"

One of my favorite stories: They would play a game where you were given a word and you would have to use it in a sentence. Dorothy was once given the word "horticulture." She quickly responded, "You can lead a whore to culture, but you can't make her think."

Wonder what Dorothy would have to say today. If you are not familiar with her, do yourself a favor, get acquainted.

8. Agree
It's no surprise to the liberal listeners that ditto-heads are brain-dead. We don't need daily reminders of that. I just stop my streaming during that segment and re-connect as soon as it's done. Al, I love you, but drop the friend.

14. Agree about this being a lame segment,
but I wonder if it serves a purpose in that I'm sure a lot of ditto-heads tune in to Al's show, maybe this is aimed at them. It does point out how vapid these cretins are.

And the Oy-Oy thing should be limited to once a week or less.

24. I believe you have a good point with regard to intent
It could be as if Al is saying, "See, even though Mark's wrong so many times, we're still friends and I care enough about him to hope he sees the light. I hope all you dittoheads listening out there will see the light too."

I'm not sure if there's a receptive audience for that tactic listening to his show.

18. I wish DU psychologists would explain this phenomenon.
Every devotee of the OxyRush show has been Limbaughtimized. Mark, Al's friend epitomizes what happens. Rush becomes like an oracle to be believed no matter how erroneous or cryptic he might be. If Rush says that a red brick is green and no matter how much you point out that the brick is red, they will insist it's green because Rush said so.

This is the first time I have seen Al so frustrated. He is usually far more patient. I know how he feels because I've been there and heard it. I really don't understand what happens to these people. Many of them are not crazy or simple-minded either in other ways. What is the psychology behind this and how do we bring them back to reality, if we even can? Everything I have tried in the way of fact presentation, reason and logic have failed.

25. cognitive dissonance
At the 5,000 foot level you can think of belief systems as
being structured like a tree: there are core (or root)
beliefs, which fan out to branch beliefs, which in turn
fan out to "leaf" beliefs.

Changing a branch or core belief means that the person
has to rejigger all of the beliefs that derive from it.
This induces anxiety and uncertainty. Often, it's easier
to reject the belief-threatening information rather than
rewire large chunks of your belief system to accomodate
an altered belief. The classic example of this are the
followers of a millenialist preacher who keeps getting the
date of the rapture wrong. It's easier to believe that
the preacher is wrong about the date or that god is testing
your faith than it is to rethink your whole belief system.

Persuasion itself is a multi-faceted process. People
vary -- some of us respond much better to reason and
logic and emotional or "irrational" messages don't persuade
us. Many people are wired in the opposite way: they
respond much better to emotional messages than logically
structured messages, particularly if they're worn out and
tired. The bulk of a therapist's job, really, lies in
figuring out how to ask subtle questions in the mode that
a client is using. It's really, really hard to get people
to switch out of their dominant processing mode. Most of us
won't do it unless a crisis forces it upon us.

So when logic and reason fail you, start using emotional
rhetoric.

J.

26. Thanks for answering.
It helps. I wouldn't really know how to do an emotional appeal about this right wing mind set. I mean do you threaten them, frighten them? I have tried the emotional appeal of how many people are being injured and hurt by our foreign policy, but it really doesn't make an impression.

I had another thought. Is it possible that they are using mass hypnotism? Is hypnotism real? Let's say for argument's sake that it is. Is it possible to do it over the radio waves? I mean can you lull someone with your voice. It seems that this is what Rush is doing and then he tells them what they want to hear while he injects his message between the lines.

I mean, if you have these religious fundies going to Church two to three times a week. Could they be getting hypnotized by the preachers and then could they be listening to Rush Limbaugh another three hours getting this hypnotism reinforced?

I know I am feeling positively Roswell and :tinfoilhat: right now.

Whenever the dittohead segment comes on I swtich to Tom Hartman. This is worst part of Franken's program. The sad thing is Tom Hartman is so interesting that I forget to switch back to Franken.

And many of those friends aren't voting for Bush. They realize he's bad for our country. Although, there are those militant reichwingers that I wouldn't have as friends. Of course they wouldn't have me as a friend either.
