Church in Ohio regging voters and driving them to polls
I met a girl in mcdonalds.I stopped there when my 7 year old had to use the restroom.Well long story short I ran into an employee there.Really sad actually. She was 20 with two kids. She had a * button on her purse.I thought it was rather surreal that a micky d`s employee would be so pro-* so I asked why she was voting for him.
Her reply was that her pastor registered her to vote and would drive her to the polls. He gave her the button to remind her whom to vote for.I was totally shocked. She seemed rather challenged. She honestly did not even know who else was running. Also that she felt she could not vote for anyone but * because her pastor said she should. Her church is having a bus to get people to the polls.Exact quote is"I have to vote for the pResident because they drive me there.Wont they be mad at me if I dont?" I spent a good 20 mins explaining to her why * is so wrong for america.I also felt really saddened by her life.Shes 20 with two kids and a husband that cant work (ms) and no health care. She is really grateful to her church. They provide her with a basket of food every holiday.I gave her a food banks number and mine.Church is a methodist not far from andover ohio.

2. I saw Christian Coalition Voter guides on the table in the foyer
of church this morning.

I couldn't turn my nose up fast enough at them.

4. rhino47, get the church name and report them to the IRS! This is
becoming more commonplace than ever in this country, churches getting involved in politics! This will cause them to lose their tax-exempt status! Remind this poor lady that she is an individual, tax-paying citizen who can vote for who she darn well pleases! Do you think you helped her to at least take a look at Kerry?

It would be totally cruel and hypocritcal for the church to disrupt their aid for her if they found out she voted for Kerry.

5. Sic the IRS On Them!
If the pastor was telling them to vote for * *in church*
he has stepped over the line, and his church should lose
its tax exemption.

6. Call the I.R.S !!!!!
If this "church" is endorsing a candidate, they need to have their tax status adjusted. Seriously, if you don't want to make the call, PM me with their info, and I will.

12. Thats what I thought. It was against the law for the church to do that.
We all know that churches endorse * well not all of them but allot do.I was at a shrine in ohio where they had the so called candidate guide. It was an outright ad for * .

You might want to be careful. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, or some such.

8. The difference
A minister can bring in anybody he/she wants to speak to the congregation. BUT the minister cannot endorse anybody or tell anybody how to vote. That crosses the line which is what this pastor did when he gave the woman a Bush button.

9. or just a distinction?
The candidate cannot campaign for votes in the church either. Edwards came dangerously close to advocating for us - the sort of thing that will be held over our head when all hell breaks lose on 11/3 when people start crying 'bout "cheaters". The Pastor sure didn't help when he said that the congregation was looking at a future President - that also comes close to an endorsement, IMHO.

It would be easier (and, legit I think from a 1st amendment point of view) to allow people, in and out of church, to exercise their right to freedom of speech. Then this whole thing would go away.

I got tired of the whining every time Clinton went into an AME church.

11. Take away their tax exemption
And they can do whatever they want to do. Personally, church is for worshipping and people ought to get their political news somewhere else. If people can't make up their own minds who to vote for without help from the minister, they need to be deprogrammed, not go to church some more.

That's just the old Catholic who takes personal responsibility for developing my conscience and using the brain God gave me speaking there.

10. Now I know why the extreme fundies
have said, "Liberals want to ban the Bible."

This is "IT", folks!

They know we are for separation of Church and State...and, tell their congregations that we "liberals" are against God, Jesus, and the Bible.

Of course, we're not. But, THEY believe we are when we turn them into the IRS for pontificating politics from the pulpit.

This is fucking unbelievable!

15. I call them "Bribes for Christ"!
It's pathetic and shameful. I hope this woman and her family receive proper nourishment...but, not by someone standing over her with a Bible telling her who to vote for!

There are other charities that can help her with no strings attached. Please check out other local options for her.

Good luck!

:hi:
