Voting machine controversy

08/28/03

Julie Carr Smyth
Plain Dealer Bureau

Columbus - The head of a company vying to sell voting machines in Ohio told Republicans in a recent fund-raising letter that he is "committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the president next year."

The Aug. 14 letter from Walden O'Dell, chief executive of Diebold Inc. - who has become active in the re-election effort of President Bush - prompted Democrats this week to question the propriety of allowing O'Dell's company to calculate votes in the 2004 presidential election.

1. If Diebold is as blatant as that
then maybe we have a chance to deep six the idea of their 'voting' machines.

2. I believe we need to take this down to a grassroots level.
We need organized, multiple protests at each State Board of Elections, Attorney General's offices, etc. We need telephone call and e-mail campaigns at the state level to the legislatures and the govenors.

This needs to be done now before the money is spent and the die is cast.

4. I agree.
It won't matter how hard we work, or how many voters come to the polls, if the makers of voting machines have promised to deliver the election to Bush.

6. The good news is
that maybe public awareness of the problem is increasing. The article
is included in this morning's Drudge Report.
