Three terms for Bush? Four?
If (just saying if!) George W. Bush is duly elected this year, and considering he was not actually elected in 2000, could some Republican nitwit suggest or enact the idea that Bush would be eligible again in 2008? If he's selected by the Supremes again this year, could he get two more chances?

The reason I ask:

Amendment XXII:

Section 1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

Outside of the fact that the country probably won't make it much past 2006 in this scenario, would this be something that those numbnuts could dream up and possibly make happen? Would they be able to admit that he was selected in 2000 in order to justify it?

1. They'd have to admit he wasn't elected in 2000
They'll never admit it.

4. If it got him another four years, they'd admit it.
They have no shame, no scruples, and no morals.

2. He was sworn in, he held the office

Your theory falls apart in the emphasized portions. Bush* served out Presidnet Gore's term - even drunk and stupid the whole term it still technically counts.

3. In short, no.
Here's the key phrase: "...no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President...."

Doesn't matter if the elections were (are) in dispute. He was sworn in to the office, period.

Now, is it in the realm of possibility that a Republican Congress in combination with a Republican administration would try to push through a repeal of the 22nd Amendment? Yes, possible, but I doubt seriously that it would pass the necessary three-fourths of states ratifying, at least in time for the 2008 election.

At any rate, if Bush by some hook or crook manages to win, by 2008, even the Republicans won't want him around any longer. He's already as crazy as a shithouse rat now--what will he be like in four years? :wow:

7. His health won't hold up that long.
Dubya already suffers from pre-senile dementia, as indicated by the steady decline in his speaking skills and mental health since his days as the Governor of Texas. If he gets another four years, he'll probably suffer a nervous breakdown and end up drooling out of the side of his mouth by 2008.

As for Cheney, bear in mind that he has a heart attack once every 4 years on average. He can't keep evading the Grim Reaper forever, even as much as he may delude himself of this reality.

9. Pretty good
I like the "asshat."

For some reason, ever since I first saw the word "asshat" it cracks me up.
