Darfur: Where the F* are France, Germany, etc.?
So, I'm a good liberal. I feel guilty at the sound of a bell. I feel guilty that the US is not doing enough to end the genocide in Darfur.

But, where is the rest of the world? France, Germany, Russia, etc. aren't supporting our coalition in Iraq (rightly so). Can't they do a little something? All the people who are not fighting in Iraq plus the UN cannot do something about this while we have our hands tied fighting our own corrupt administration?

Honestly, what would they do without us? I have a lot of respect for European and UN positions on Iraq, and US imperialism. But is it too much to ask that THEY take care of Darfur for us? What are they waiting for?

Not to be xenophobic, but what the hell are they waiting for? I've got enough to feel guilty about, with all of the innocent Iraqi blood (and innocent US troops' blood) on our hands already.

1. I think the same thing
I'm fine with their opposition to the Iraq Blunder, but sometimes people need to step up. Noone did in Rwanda, and look what happened. The UN is holding meetings about Darfur, but meanwhile, so many are dying. Its a crisis and no one is doing anything.

Very frustrating. The UN should step up on this one. I agree.

2. Diplomacy
The African Union would prefer to handle the problem without outside interference. Germany has signaled willingness to deploy troops, but wasn't asked by the UN so far. To be honest: it doesn't really want to get asked. By now it is too late for an effective deployment, as it was done in Congo.

In any case, Germany's army is pretty much maxed out by the current deployments in Afghanistan and other places and has to maintain a reserve should things get ugly there.
While the army is pretty big in numbers, it is still mostly made up from conscripts equipped for a tank-battle in central Europe (and a few countries still do not like the idea of a mobile German Army).

3. Thank you for the information
Can I stop feeling guilty about US inaction on this issue now? If the rest of the world is handling/not handling it?

4. France has done some things
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/3543660.stm

France has sent about 200 soldiers and begun airlifting relief supplies to eastern Chad - where 150,000 Sudanese refugees have crossed the border to escape the fighting in Darfur.

5. Why should / would they?
If they do, what happens? The next time the U.S. has a president with a stiffie to start something, he can do so and let everyone know that our allies will eventually see it our way.

If they stay out, then the next time we have another asshole in office who has a daddy to avenge, he'll know that when our allies say "not this time," they mean it.
