TV Land tonight: Politics and the Tube, a fun look. Sax to 'Sock it to me'

Inside TV Land: Prime Time Politics
Tonight at 10, TV Land.

The latest "Inside TV Land" special "Prime Time Politics," a look at the intersection of politics and TV entertainment, got me immediately by giving due credit to Pat Paulsen and the Smothers Brothers.

It's not perfect. "Prime Time Politics," airing tonight, suffers a bit by being neither chronological nor comprehensive. Yet at the same time, it serves up so much that it's impossible not to like it.

SNIP..."Producer-director Wendy Lobel wrote this with Linda Ellerbee, which explains the program's high intelligence level, as well as its taste in interviewees: not only Tom Smothers and Rob Reiner (who wrote for "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" in its final and most volatile season), but Harry Shearer, Stephen Colbert, Howard Dean and Barry Bostwick, who narrates.

"The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" gets properly saluted in "Prime Time Politics," and more vintage clips include Bill Clinton playing sax on Arsenio Hall's late-night show, Richard Nixon asking "Sock it to me?" on "Laugh-In" and Robert F. Kennedy, the year he ran for President and was assassinated, dissecting Paulsen's faux presidential campaign ("I think he has peaked a little early").

Ah, Pat Paulsen....what a wonderful campaign that was !

1. Kerry's appearance on Cheers was in the promo.
I saw the promo last night on Nick at Nite, and Kerry's guest spot on Cheers was one of the clips they ran. So you might want to check it out.

5. I remember that.
I really did understand the "camelot" thing. It was very real.

3. Remember when Nixon went on Laugh-In and said, "Sock it to ME?"
Ooops--actually I'm too YOUNG to have remembered that. Never mind!

7. This is a really good show.....
Moves pretty quickly, wish they would slow it down and make it two hours instead. Covers a lot of shows.

8. Well, my hubby and I thought it was great. Are we the only older folks?
Are we the only ones who remember these shows? I don't believe that. It replays several times on TV Land. Great commentators, and Dean did a good job...really sharp at commentary...as he said "Reagan WAS the show."

Don't miss the replays. Oh, I miss the Smothers Brothers so very much, and I hate CBS for cancelling them. And I got teary over Bobby Kennedy being interviewed by Tom Smothers about Pat Paulsen's candidacy....saying Pat had peaked....I miss Kennedy also.

Called Inside TV Land.
