3. Canada
Canada accepts more legal immigrants relative to its population than any country on Earth.

In the past two years, almost half a million immigrants arrived, a shade less than half of them in one city alone -- Toronto. The largest numbers for the country as a whole, amounting to almost 40 per cent of the total, came from China, India, Pakistan and the Philippines.

The federal government, responsible for immigration targets, heralds these waves on humanitarian and economic grounds, the argument being that immigration shows Canada as a caring country whose new arrivals will fuel future economic growth.

7. Can you repatriate if you have grandparents who emigrated?
Not that I would threaten to throw myself in front of traffic or anything! :)

4. Now it's up!
Thanks AP!

The show featuring Benjamen Walker's call to Canadian immigration just got posted. Last week, I ran another show featuring different war related segments from Your Radio Nightlight, as well.

Check it out and tell me what you think. Also, be sure to visit Walker himself at:

8. happy to be here
Thanks Newyawker, happy to be here.

I found the site because I got a spike of show downloads referred from an unknown source, and decided to check it out.

I've really enjoyed reading the board.

11. i do it all
I'm Roman Mars and I'm the producer, host, editor, engineer, mixer, webmaster and intern of Invisible Ink.

(I also help out on Working Assets Radio and show up as an Announcer on KALW from time to time.)

It's nice to see that there are KALW listeners out there preaching the gospel. I volunteer almost all my time at the station. I love public radio, when it's done right. They do it right.

It's also good hear that you like Tavis. I think his show is great. Too bad NPR is trying to cannibalize it's success with their push to get the new "Day to Day" show in all the markets.

Thanks again.

13. What's Day to Day? Tell me more.
Tavis has a tone so different from most of the crap on NPR, I can't imagine that they're happy with it (even though I understand it's the fastest growing show they've ever had). I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to sabotage it with something that's less interested in the, uh, issues.

(I have a friend who decribes Tavis's falling out with BET as being because he liked to talk about the "issues" too much.)

14. Day to Day and Tavis
Sorry for the delayed response, AP. The network has been out.

"Day To Day" is the new midday show that is a coproduction of NPR and Microsoft's Slate. If that's not enough to make you feel icky about the whole venture, there's this scathing review from the Chronicle:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2003/08/20/DD277990.DTL

Since it's hard to clear five hours of radio time for a new show, Program Directors around the country will likely be choosing between Day to Day and Tavis. Or, Day to Day and the second hour of Talk of the Nation. Day to Day premiered on over 50 stations. That's a lot for a daily show nobody had heard. It certainly seems that NPR is putting the heavy push behind D2D and leaving Tavis on his own. That's just my perception. I have no actual information.

Day to Day is the first program out of the west coast studios and it is trying to have a more youthful edge. I am pretty young (28, a mere infant in the public radio market), and I think this is a fine goal, but I don't think that back to back features on "The OC" is the way to achieve this. (That's what I heard on the show when I turned it on most recently.)

Just so you know, this post contains no inside information, and I don't represent the station in any way. I'm just a public radio fan.

For those who haven't heard it, it's really smart.

I love the Tavis Smiley Show, and I love This American Life, both of which are clearly very mainstream in their liberalism, and their politics are always under the surface. I also like Car Talk, because, in its essence, it's a show which helps people spend less on what is for most people, their biggest financial outlay after housing. So, those three shows really click with me, but none really capture my desire for VERY serious criticism of how America works. Invisible Ink does do that, and it does it in a way that is very smart.

If people don't have bandwith to listen to the show, they should at least check out the website.

The show last week was the first one I ever heard. It's great too.
