The Osama tape and its subtle message
Why did Osama bin Laden do something he has thus far refused to do --take the responsibility for the planning of 911? Was there a subtle political strategy to his doing so?

Chris Matthews repeatedly says 42 percent of the people voting for Bush* still think there was a connection between Saddam and 911. When Osama says publicly to those who will vote, "I did it" was he not also subtly saying, Saddam did not do it?

That tape and its timely release was designed to carry a message. I believe that message was targeted towards that 42%.

Anyone think this might be the case?

1. What about Osama's ego?
Osama is in the poll position for leader of Islam once Bush starts ww3.

2. I think his ego would prompt him to try to influence the election
The other message that tape sent was here I am, Bush* went after the wrong guy. I think his ego would prompt to think he would love nothing more to contribute to Bush*s political demise.

Why do you think the tape was released in such a timely manner? It's not coincidence.

BTW, it certainly did not impress me. I am voting Democratic even if Jesus comes to me in a dream tonight and personally tells me HE DID PUT BUSH* IN THE OVAL OFFICE. Just wanted to make that clear....

3. I think picking up on subtleties
is not that 42 percent's strong suit. OBL may have been wasting his time.

4. Very t rue
One cannot "reason" with some of these die-hard Bush* supporters. I finally realized this from discussions with someone in my own family.
I no longer try.

6. I read the version the Swedish had
Are you aware of the discussion over the use of the word "state" in the transcript. Some "states" will insure their own security ... Some versions have used the word country. Others say the literal word is state, not country. The essence centers around "states" can insure their own security by not supporting (those who attack Muslims)*

The discussion I have heard includes speculation that Osama is saying if a state does not support Bush* it will not be attacked.

I have no idea is who is correct or incorrect about that word, but considering the implications, that would be astounding if Osama actually verbally ventured that far.

*can't remember the exact wording.

8. I am sorry, bemildred
I am not sure what you are saying. Do you agree with the premise of this thread? Is it obvious in the al Jazeera version?

10. I will try to clarify.
Not trying to annoy you.

I don't think OBL cares at all about the 42%.
I don't think he was being subtle.
I don't think he was trying to sway the election, in the sense
that he intended to help Bush, and it makes no sense for him to
support Kerry.

He was addressing Muslims primarily, and others in the rest of the
World, not the USA, and he was secondarily sending a big "F..K You"
to the government of the USA.

13. And I do agree with Mr. K-W that is was the timing.
Guaranteed to get lots of attention because of the proximity
to the election.

9. I really dont think he cares that much who wins this election.
Edited on Mon Nov-01-04 11:33 PM by K-W
I think, the way he sees it, Republican or Democrat, the fundemental principle of a US prescence in the middles east, particularly supporting Isreal, is not going to change. Regardless of who wins his plan is to blow his way through the US until the people call en masse for a total withdrawl from the middle east.

I think this tape comes when it does because of the boosted publicity. He isnt sitting in a volcano lair planning ways to toy with us. He is an international criminal from a completely different culture with a very international perspective. He isnt obsessed with the U.S. alone. I think he would have rather attacked the US last week, but he couldnt, so he released a tape. Not to try and influence the election, but to terrorize the people.

He is just rolling the dice. He is niether in tune with what is going on here enough, or interested enough to have done it with a particular mind towards where they would land.

11. But I do agree that he probably was making a point that HE was responsible
But not to effect the election, to get the terror cred.

12. But he wanted the US out of Saudia Arabia
and that was rumored to be one of the reasons for the 911 attack. We left.

I think he's learned he can get some of what he wants, and he got this through pressure asserted on the government of Saudia Arabia.

I agree that he probably doesn't see a lot of difference in the US position, but I think, as I said above, his ego prompts him to revel in the possibility he can talk directly to the US voters and give his version of the "truth."

14. Religious fundementalists usually aren't big on settling for a little.
He wants a heck of alot more than that. Try Isreal for starters.

He hasn't learned anything, he knows just as well as we do that we only pulled out of Saudi Arabia because we planned to go into Iraq. Osama doesnt want to tone us down, he wants to drive us out of the middle east.

His ego really isnt an issue here. He is talking to US voters because they are, and always have been, his audience. He is a terrorist. His goal is to scare the American people soo much that they force thier government to give into his demands. That is the entire point of terrorism. That is what he said in his message.
