What Bush Threw Away
George W. Bush once had a chance to be looking forward to a landslide victory today and a nation committed to standing together in defeating terrorism.

Instead, the president is perilously close to defeat. The best he can hope for is a narrow victory that will leave the nation bitter, divided and angry. One of Bush's achievements will be exceptional voter turnout and a renewal of the idea that elections and political parties matter. The downside, for him at least, is that a large share of the country has been activated for the primary purpose of ending his presidency.

A lot more....

1. I disagree with some of this
Bush NEVER could have been a "great president" - he's a puppet. And with all due respect to Mr. Dionne, we did not all fall under Bush's spell on 9/11. SOME OF US HAVE NEVER BEEN FOOLED BY THAT FRAUD.

2. Bad presidents have risen to the situation before.
Bush did not. He just exploited it for his own agenda, and it's that cynical use of a great tragedy which has so divided the nation.

5. "He could have been a great president"
I disagree strongly -- the character & integrity that mold a great president were qualities this man is lacking. He may have put on a good show after 9/11 but the man's true side couldn't stay hidden forever. He took advantage of all the good will that was gladly offered, then slapped us in the face.

The virtues so many Americans outside of Bush's party thought they saw in Bush in the months immediately after Sept. 11 -- especially that short-lived willingness to put the needs of the national emergency over the temptations of ideology and partisanship -- are the virtues the president has chosen to abandon.

It's a shame, really. Bush could have been a great president. He was for several months. He chose instead to be the leader of a party and a faction. However this election turns out, that's what he'll still be on Nov. 3.

6. I think the point is he had the opportunity
to be a great president and was offered an unprecidented chance to unite the country but he failed to do so. Even previously incompetent people can find the inner strength of leadership when faced with crisis. Bush found it for about 15 minutes and then realized how greatly he could exploit the situation.
