Here in Champaign County they test the civil defense/storm sirens every month on the first Tuesday of the month at 10 am. It may sound like a little thing, but if you live with tornadoes, it is a necessity.
As a kid, I grew up in fear of the bomb falling. This was after the Cuban Missile crisis, and during the time when Russia was the big threat in everybody's mind. I'd hear those sirens start up, and every time, I'd wonder if death was in the air. It was a hell of a thing for a kid to deal with--but it was there for all of us in my generation.
That fear has receded quite a bit in the last twenty years. Testing the sirens was just that--a test.
Recently, there has been a lot of talk about threats of an attack on election day. A lot of people have been scared of what this election day would bring. Some of us have been worried about an October surprise or even worse, a staged event on election day.
Just now the sirens started up and went on for a bit longer than usual. My first thought was OH MY LORD--IT'S HAPPENING!!! Of course, I never stopped to think it was the regular day for the sirens to be tested...
Anybody else finding today to be a bit more creepy than usual?
