On the radio today I heard this & began to wonder.

Okay, since the supreme court appointed him,not the people, this radio host asked if Bush could run again? He asked if its written that you can only serve two terms in office or is it be elected 2 terms in office. He said he heard the Bush's have been looking into this incase he wins. I woulnd;t put it passed him. ANyone know for sure?

5. No.
The president is elected by the Electoral College. He WAS indeed voted in by the EC in 2000.

8. So, using their logic, Bush won't even be a ONE-term president?
How funny is THAT!

9. The Supreme Court did not APPOINT him.
Edited on Tue Nov-02-04 04:36 PM by aden_nak
They reversed a decision that ended a recount, thus ensuring that the last count favored Bush. They installed him by a trick of the law, but he became the President through technically normal procedures. So he can only serve one more term as President.

However, if he loses, he could run again for one term. The only person to do that in the history of the nation was Grover Cleavland.

14. However, the chances of Bush being nominated again should he lose
are probably slim to none.

Even if Kerry screws up royally, Bush proved he can't draw more than 50% of the vote on two occasions and I think the Repubs would have some sense and nominate someone who could reasonably pull a significant majority of the popular vote.

Problem is, that would have to be someone like McCain or Rudy (people who can draw on the moderate voters to give them that margin of victory) and the Repub base would never allow that to happen.

19. I can't believe anyone actually believes that nonsense....
Do you recall when the race in Florida was called for Gore and a short time later that was rescinded when it was claimed that Gore had "mistakenly" been credited with at least 30,000 additional votes? Do you remember that, or has that slipped down the "memory hole"?

After the preliminary legal maneuvering, the Florida Supreme Court, a majority of which were GOP appointed, backed the Gore camp on recounts which the GOP camp appealed to the U. S. Supreme Court. The SCOTUS, in direct opposition to their philosophy NOT to interfere in judgements nade at the state level, then voted 5-4 to install El Chimpo in the White House.

El Chimpo not only lost the popular nationwide election, but with the loss of Florida, he also lost the Electoral College vote. Period. There is NO other explanation or rationale for what took place in December 2000.

You'll NEVER convince me, and tens of millions like me, that El Chimpo became the occupant of the White House "through technically normal procedures", whatever the hell that means.

17. I disagree on him running again in 2008 if he loses tonight
Edited on Tue Nov-02-04 05:00 PM by Mike Daniels
See post #14. Besides, what would he actually be able to do in 4 years that would convince people who voted against him TWICE to give him a chance on a third go-around.

Kerry would have to absolutely prove to be even more imcompetent than Bush and bring about a major recession for Bush to be able to look good on review.

20. Only 2 terms for president ... NOW
After Republicans, angry over Roosevelt's being elected for a 4th term, got the 2 term limit passed. They have been trying for the past 2 years to get it repealed.

18. It doesn't matter how he got into office, he can only serve 2 terms...
...or 10 years (if he succeeded a Prez who died or left office halfway through his term and won two re-elections).

Don't matter if the Lady of the Lake rises up and hands him Excalibur and declares him President. Don't matter if the Fairy Godmother smacks him upside the head with her magic wand and declares him President. Don't matter if god hizzownself points his mighty finger from the heavens and proclaims him President. All he gets is the lesser of two terms or 10 years.

And that's a lifetime thing, not just "consecutive". If a Prez wins two in a row, then takes a couple terms off, he still can't run again (well, he can "run" but it won't do him any good) since he's served his two terms.
