I'm a Christian, and I voted against the gay marriage amendment in my state. But I'm sure most of my Christian brothers and sisters would consider me a heretic for doing so.

I think people vote for these amendments out of feelings of hate and bigotry - not from a sense of "moral values." And I think that's just wrong.

They may have stolen some votes, but I have no doubt that this election was very close. There are lots of simple-minded people out there ... and they vote.

I sincerely hope that I am wrong about the direction that my country will now take. I hope that Bush's policies will somehow work out better for ordinary families than I think they will.

And if not, I certainly hope that the blame will fall to those who are responsible.
