The good news. Sort of.
We are now saddled with a Republican (lame duck) President and congress.
The coming policy failures can only be laid at their feet.

I see the polarization of the nation as a good thing. The Blue states are all in the northern and pacific tier. We have been shed of myth of "winning" in the South and midwest by pandering to the right.

A new, younger generation, of Democrats with much more liberal views than the DLC/DNC party establishment has been born, and they are angry. I doubt that they will sit back and allow the party to continue it's drift to the right.

The Democratic Party must move to the left or become irrelevant. The days of "not as bad as the republicans" and "we have to move to the center" are over.

1. and we must starve the red states of population
the well off dems who moved south for McMansions and sunshine, have given the red states their population iincreases and the extra electoral votes.,.

I see nothing wrong with visiting them, but moving there can be a selfish and self-destructive thing..

Goos luck ,all you 20 & 30 somethings.. It's gonna be an interesting future for y'all...

2. Is that true about the young Democrats? My (totally anecdotal and
unscientific) take is that they're more apathetic and less idealistic than previous generations--> MTV, computer-induced instant gratification, thoughts about their own financial future (those young millionaires in Silicon Valley) as contributing factors. And so many college campuses with more prominent conservatives than liberals.

4. I think you are right. But you have to
remember that todays youth has not gone through what the youth coming of age in the late 50's and 60's did. No enough anyway. I was just talking with another lady in my office this morning. We are both equally disgusted. We were discussing how todays youth and Americans in general are just apathetic, don't get involved. A lot of people for example don't know who their State representative is and don't really care. They get Iraq and Iran mixed up. They are not informed. The news media sucks and a lot of them go by what coworkers tell them, snippets they hear here and there. Or worse, they tune into Fox and believe everything they say. I thought that with all that happened in these past almost 4 years it would wake people up. But it was not enough. Sometimes I think Ralph Nader is right. Americans collectively need to be hit with a sledgehammer and get some sense knocked into them. They need a good, hard kick that will knock the air out of them and shock them back into reality. I am afraid that until things get really bad to the point that everyone's back is against the wall we just won't act. I thought it was bad enough but I guess not. I am sorry to sound so down. Yesterday I was so upbeat. I really had faith in American's common sense. I am dismayed that instead of voting with their heads, it seems the majority of Americans voted based on fear, hate and homophobia. We had a choice between fear and hope and it seems fear has won.

6. I'm really wondering what it will take to shake up all these folks--the
selfish youth, the religious sheeple who actually voted for the guy their churches told them to (that really shocked me!), and the apathetic bunch.

My little sister (26) was just talking about the self centeredness and ignorance about the future re: our parent' baby boomer Republican vote.

10. Ah, yes. I forgot about that.
And I am ashamed to be of that generation. We are the children of the generation that fought and suffered for so many of our rights. But our generation makes more money. So its so easy to forget, you know? So many from my generation that are greedy and selfish and raising children who are the same way. Not everyone of course. But a good number. I hardly speak to my "best" friend anymore. She has become a sheeple. She used to be intelligent and articulate.

8. While I agree with you about the apathy of many
the fact that many of them will be out of work and killing and dying around the world is going to impact them. The ones that have become politically aware during this campaign are not of the "dress for success", political opportunist, Carville, type.

I may be wrong, but as conditions worsen for the youth, (as they surely will), they will become even more energized. They will be looking to the Kucinich, Dean, wing of the party.

I believe that many of them are becoming aware that there really are more important things in the world than whether they drive BMWs or wear $300 shoes.

There's nothing like having to look for a job that doesn't exist and facing the draft to motivate even the "me" generation.

5. I agree.....

Obviously, the American electorate needs more evidence of the 'creeping fascism'. Its not as if the BFEE have been discreet in their first term; Think how over-the-top they're going to be now.

And you've probably avoided another "terrorist"(snicker) attack.

Fight on Comrades!!

7. On AAR, someone mentioned the need for a NEW, COURAGEOUS faction
of Dems to be organized, those who aren't afraid to stand up for genuine liberal ideas.

You know what made me wince during the campaign (among a few others)?

The fact that Kerry himself DENIED he even was a LIBERAL when on Jon Stewart's Daily Show. Now he conceded right there that being a liberal was a bad thing, totally playing along with the right wing script!

Time for the Howard Dean Dems to organize and take over the party!

11. I think most of what you say is true. But not the only reasons loss
of middle America.

We don't even really know who makes up this "middle-America" voting edge that consistently goes to the Republicans since Reagan was in office. We need to learn who they are. Where they came from. How long have they been there. How long have they been citizens. No time to go into details today but this is the best kept secrect of the Republicans. You have lots of "new" citizens living in these "red" states. Get to know them and their backgrounds. Money escaping from socialist-leaning countries in south America, the Balkans, Russia, China even many Arab and Indian people of the same social persuasions. It's not the Mexican you need to worry about. It's those wealthy, fascist (racist)-leaning immigrants who have ushered in a new "new frontier." Your eyes have been diverted from the real ball in the air. Wake up!! We have been watching the poor Mexicans who escape here for a better life. We have not been told about nor have we learned about the "other immigrants" who now comfortably reside in "middle America."

We need to find ways to embrace, convert, and include these people. But then, since you didn't know they were there, how could you?
