Should Dems abandon social issues and become Populists?
If Bush succeeds in appointing a new conservative Supreme Court that will last a generation, there will be ABSOLUTELY NOTHING we can do ANY WAY to prevent it. ESPECIALLY if we can't get a significant majority in Congress. How do we attain that majority?

Moral values issues were rated highest in exit polling. If we can't turn the fundie base against the GOP we're looking at permanent minority status.

Maybe we should cede the "morality" issues for the time being and go full-throttle populist. Income redistribution. Tax fairness. Anti-NAFTA, WTO. Free socialized health care and retirement by soaking the rich. Restore the 90% tax bracket for incomes over a half mill. Up SS contributions to $200K.

Remain strident internationalists in foreign policy. The people will return to it once we started seriously reaping the damage done by PNAC policies.

If we can attain the majority based on economic issues by avoiding the wedge issues, we can then begin the fight to return the country to modernity on issues like affirmative action, abortions, guns, gays, etc. Would it be worth it to abandon our ideals in the short term for a strategy that will guarantee us victory in the future?

3. Another alternative
Let them have their no-tax, no-service 19th century federal government. Blue states should REFUSE to pay more than our FAIR SHARE of federal taxes (we are net givers to the federal purse and red states are net takers).

Blue states can form an informal commonwealth predicated on state's rights. Pool tax dollars to create an advanced civil society with health care, education, workers' rights, civil rights. Within ten years the red states will be screaming to join us...
