Life goes on.
Even under the shittiest governments people get up in the morning and go about their business. Children head off to school, adults to work; they manage to live their lives in some fashion or another. Germans did it under Naziism, Russians did it under Communism.

Around the world people dodge bullets and bombs to get a loaf of bread. Israelis and Palestinians do it, Iraqis do it. We don't. Let us be thankful for that, and may it remain that way.

That told, to recognize a fascist political process and be unable to stop it is a most awful and helpless feeling. Our fascism is flowering in a form uniquely American and particular to this era. It is not a time of identity documents and armbands and repression; it is a time of microchips and databases and deception. My deepest fear is that America will require massive destruction, like Nazi Germany, or complete disintegration, like the Soviet Union, to change course. In that time we will have squandered our national patrimony--our wealth, our freedom, our values, and our hopes. I can only hope that our nation comes to its collective senses before it reaches that point.

1. Not for our dead soldiers - and there will be more
Not for the dead innocent Iraqis - and there will be more.
Not for the dead from 9/11 - and there will be more.

3. Understood.
Life in the collective sense. I do remember the 50 million who died in World War II. Somehow the world managed to pull itself to its feet after that catastrophe. I believe we are on the path to another such catastrophe, and I pray we are not.

5. Thanks for not shredding me
I am scared to death for my nephew (16 yo) and sick to my soul that we have allowed this monster to continue his reign. Today, I fear for us.

Tomorrow I'll be back in fighting mode and ready to "get up, stand up". Today I'm just sick.

2. National ID Cards
I heard that national ID cards were in the patriot act 2? Does anyone know anything about this.

4. Funny you should mention Nazi Germany
was talking to one of my German accounts today. Everyone over there is astounded that we would re-elect the idiot. He asked, "do you think Germans would have re-elected Hitler after WWII?" I've been having to explain how the Repukes control everything - the media, voting machines etc., and to please not believe that the majority of Americans support Shrub.

I share your fear. I think it will take economic collapse (which I feel is likely under Shrub) for people to wake up and then it will be too late.
