How do we get rid of these Diebold Machines?
Hear me out.
Clearly the Repukes are delighted with them.
Obviously they happen to be in God knows how many states
If they are as bad as I believe them to be it seems to me that to counter these touchtone screens a sticker campaign will have to be mounted with a last minute write in candidate. A daunting prospect but one that would leave a paper trail.

It would require a MASSIVE GOTV effort, extremely cordinated.Basically allowing deadlines to pass and then supplying stickers for the "stealth "candidate who could get in to break the hold of these machines particarly for the Sec of State's job in Ohio and Fla

I know its a stretch but any other ideas?

1. Take your money out of any bank that uses Diebold ATMs
Make sure the bank manger knows why. "If you're using Diebold equipment, I can't trust you not to cheat me."

3. But how are we going to get them out of FLA and Ohio?
Lobbying won't do it.

Do you think a repuke state official in those states is going to advocate getting rid of them?

6. So what do we do?
Are you saying this is impossible? Even if you can demonstrate they're unreliable?

4. They will NEVER part with their little vote manufacturing machines.
Edited on Wed Nov-03-04 05:58 PM by SoCalDem
It was 1/3 this election.. by 06 it will be 50%, and by 08, 75%..

We were briar-patched.. We screamed and hollered about Florida 2k, and they gave us what we said we wanted with HAVA..

We demanded EASY and FAST..and we got EASY and Fast (and corrupted)..

It's too bad we didn't just demand paper for everyone.

8. If these machines are allowed to spread beyond where they are
now IT IS TRULY OVER.

The DNC needs to direct everything toward getting rid of these machines

Please offer suggestions as to how to accomplish this

5. tax revolt
these machines truly create a circumstance of taxation without representation. I'm not kidding. Either that or a tea party that no one will notice these days any more than the main stream media noticed the freeway blogger or the low riders in Taos, NM who protested their inability to register to vote last week.

That's what it is gonna take I swear.

9. what if we all refused to pay taxes?
seriously, they would notice that boycott and, as an added bonus, they wouldn't have the budget to jail us all!

12. I pulled this threat during the first weeks of '99
during the impeachment proceedings. I wrote one of the most funny and powerful things I've ever reading encouraging people to threaten their Senator's with the line. . ."that they were so terribly insensed by the inappropriateness of all of this that they might go so far as to consider not paying their taxes this year. That is if they weren't so damned patriotic."

That was back when they were threatening to have the hearings continue for 8 months. I demanded that they resolve the matter by Feb 14 (President's Day). They resolved the matter on February 12th. I sent it to a meager 11 recipients and totally underestimated the power of the internet. By that evening, it was quoted on the evening news.

I'm more fed up now than I was then and am considering a reprisal of that screed.

Time will tell whether I have it in me.

7. Is there any legislation to require a paper trail?
I thought there was a law requiring this by 2006, but I could be wrong.

13. only in CA is it required by '06
HR 2239 and S1980 are written to ameliorate many of the problems inherant in the HAVA Act of '02. They were both squelched by the Repukes. Can't expect anything better now with the folks in charge. We need to do some activism on this or our democracy will be lost irrevocably.

15. a "paper trail" only prints out what it's programmed to print out
the "vote" is still vapor, and can be programmed to go entirely somehere else..

Think about it.. Look at the intricacies of video games.. Do you really think that the programmers are not capable of having the paper print what you SEE, but the internal workings record something else??

We might as well use voo-doo or just roll the dice..or cut cards.

We have lost control of our election process, and the ones in control will not give it up.. It's too valuable of a tool for them

10. How about early/absentee voting?
There was a lot of it this year already, and maybe we need to push this as a preferred option in future years. I know the rethugs will use any possible excuse to disqualify absentee ballots, but it still leaves more of a paper trail than does Diebold. Encourage everyone to send absentee ballots and get a "proof of mailing" certificate at the post office for a few cents extra, or even a "return receipt." That way they can't say the ballot was never mailed, or never received.

11. Where I'm from you need a compelling reason for an
absentee ballot and if entire precincts voted that way here I feel that those votes would not count

It is pathetic that we are trying to figure out a way to establish a paper trail of voting in this country

17. Maybe push for "Standardized Elections" - National Optical Scan
Optical scan is hard to screw up and easy to recount.

18. It's the ONLY system I trust
It works, it is accurate, it is verifiable.

We need it nationally. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best.

We need to demand that our legislators take action on it.

19. Get involved where you are, locally.
Go down to the elections office. Meet your elections administrator. Talk to them, openly, about your concerns with machines lacking a paper trail. Find organizations in your community that are already doing this. Raise awareness IN YOUR COMMUNITY. Write LTTEs. Organize a local committee if there's not one already. Become more informed and NAG NAG NAG NAG NAG. Nag your congressperson. Network. Find local journalists who are allies. Educate people. Have a local referendum or initiative to get rid of them.

DO THE HARD WORK. ORGANIZE LOCALLY. ALL POLITICS ARE LOCAL.

If you're not in a Diebold county, do all the same, just to make sure they don't go out and buy that crap behind your back.
