Thank you Southern DUers, for all you have done.
We out here in California forget that we have a large democratic base to work with here in the first place. DU'ers in the red south have to put up with amazing amounts of resistance, and a lot of them are extremely active, trying to get the vote to swing our way. Not to mention they have to put up with crazy bubbas shooting holes in their signs and houses because the brainwashed idiots "don't want no damn commie living next door to me."

I rather admire anyone who could be politically active there.

Cheers to you southern DU'ers, and a huge thanks from the bottom of this Californians heart.

2. Agreed
Would have been better if Kerry had actually *included* Southern folks, working folks, blacks into his campaign, instead of *outreach*.

See when you include people in the process you may actually learn something.

24. It's the Religion thing
Even someone as anti-democratic as Bush is a-ok as long as he's "God's Man"

I wouldn't be surprised if he got a small number of Black votes in the south based on the religious issues, though I haven't heard of anything about "a lot".

8. I agree totally
the campaign lacked the diversity that would have created more ownership in the election. This is a mandate for the future of this party. Also, we've got to do away with the "all or nothing" electoral college.

11. The EC sucks.
It's an outdated system that has never been representative of the voting populace. Don't look for it to get scrapped anytime soon though.

13. absolutely! and it's very demoralizing to vote in a state that doesn't
match your color, for dems and repubs. Everyone's voice should be heard through their one vote. I live in GA and they called GA at 7:00 p.m. on the dot while many were still waiting in line because we are such a "red state". This is inherently unfair and detrimental to democracy. Many dejected dems here today wondered aloud about the need for voting since our state is so red. This is a real problem.

5. I never had any hope for Texas,
so I spent 5 hours this weekend calling people up in Cinncinnati trying to get the vote out. They'd been called to death but I did have some good conversations and arranged for one woman to be driven to the polls.

It felt good to at least try to do something.

14. One of the most disturbing
results to me was Pennsylvania and New Jersey. In that, Bush seems to have made inroads into what were previously solid blue states. Gore won these by double digits in 2000 check the results this year.

I cannot tell you how dangerous it would be for conservatives to establish any sort northeastern state stronghold. Since we have virtually no chance of winning any bush states, right wingers would have no trouble winning the presidency.

The danger we face as a party is that while Bush seems to be expanding the republican influence we dont seem to be changing any minds anywhere. This is very worrisome to me. How do we expand our constituency?

18. Kerry ran a shit campaign.
Flame me all you want for that, but he went all Dukakis on us, posing for all those stupid pictures, refusing to challenge shrub on the swift boats stuff, refusing to nip the Catholic Church thing off in the bud, etc. He was (pardon the sports analogy) playing not to lose, and not to win.

To answer James Carvilles question from last night, that's why he handed shrubs ass to him on all three debates, and still lost the election. The average American does not watch debates.

21. Come on...
This is what I heard in the analysis all day and quite frankly I am starting to look inward a little.

Look to what you just wrote " The average American does not watch debates."

The debates were some of the highest rated ever and they werent all being watched by democrats.

The assumption that our opponents or average americans are not smart is the absolutely wrong starting point. We have got to stop this elitist know-it-all BS.

How many conservatives do you know. How many practising christians do you know? I dont know any...so my opinion has always been seriously skewed.

23. I donated to Dem campaigns in states...
Edited on Wed Nov-03-04 09:00 PM by AldebTX
that had a chance. (in Fla and NC) With our lovely redistricting here in Texas there was little hope of any real gains. I was at least glad to hear they were only 4 of 5 on the newly drawn districts and not 5 for 5 in the house races here.

6. thanks for that...
It's pretty depressing around here a lot of the time. No matter how much you put out in this state, the rednecks and sharks always seem to win.

At least we still have a Dem Governor!

12. Yes we did
What kills me is that with the voting machines, if there is a change of heart that starts swinging the numbers blue somewhere down the line, we'll never know about it. The truth will be locked in the black box. It's frustrating. The fight against electronic voting must continue.

19. De nada....gracias.
thanks....it's hard weeerk someime. When I checked in here on DU this morning, I was amazed at the many DUers who were cursing this country, cursing the people of this country, cursing Kerry and even their fellow Duers. If we, in the South, can continue to work for the Progressive Movement against these odds, so can all the others who don't live here in bubba-land.

I must admit I cursed at some fellow DUers this morning too, DUers who were putting down Kerry and America...I now apologize if I cursed you, that's not really me.
