Too Little, Too Late

By Robert Parry
November 3, 2004

George W. Bush’s electoral victory is chilling proof that the conservatives have achieved dominance over the flow of information to the American people and that even a well-run Democratic campaign stands virtually no chance for national success without major changes in how the news media operates.

It is not an exaggeration to say today that the most powerful nation on earth is in the grip of an ideological administration – backed by a vast network of right-wing think tanks, media outlets and attack groups – that can neutralize any political enemy with smears, such as the Swift boat ads against John Kerry’s war record, or convince large numbers of people that clearly false notions are true, like Saddam Hussein’s link to the Sept. 11 attacks.

The outcome of Election 2004 also highlights perhaps the greatest failure of the Democratic/liberal side in American politics: a refusal to invest in the development of a comparable system for distributing information that can counter the Right’s potent media infrastructure. Democrats and liberals have refused to learn from the lessons of the Republican/conservative success.

The history is this: For the past quarter century, the Right has spent billions of dollars to build a vertically integrated media apparatus – reaching from the powerhouse Fox News cable network through hard-line conservative newspapers and magazines to talk radio networks to book publishing to well-funded Internet operations and right-wing bloggers.

2. The media provided an aura of plausibility
for potential election fraud because of auditless voting software. Too wacky? How are we ever going to know without ballots to recount?

3. Different view
Go to johnkerry.com and look at all the endorsements he got from the majority of American newspapers, including the most respected.

Impressive.

But I do agree the American press gave Bush a pass for way too long. Hopefully, they have found their voice and will keep it.

We have to insist on solid reporting and then support the media that do it. SUBSCRIBE, don't just read it online for free. Circulation numbers are critical.

4. true, but...
I think the greater threat to democracy--and the greater implicit support for the chimp--comes from cable news. Newspaper endorsements are great, but they just can't compete with the steady 24/7 drumbeat of war, or the swifties, or Scott Peterson, or Michael Jackson, etc.

5. Electronic media are the main problem
Right wing talk shows and cable TV are what pound the right wing agenda home. Newspapers reach those who have the time, the interest and the education to read them. Many newspapers reach for the lowest common denominator--Most people aren't analyzing the NYT for chrissake.

6. you are naive
the media is the hand maiden of the war machine and they
will never "find their voice"

the purpose of the media is to manufacture consent for the policies of the ruling elite, nothing more

the media are hardcore right wing

they don't care about fairness, and not even about PROFITS!!!
(GE makes more money on selling defense equipment and reconstruction projects than they do selling advertisments - and besides, war and terorrism results in more tv viewers which equals more $)

they have been through 20 years of investment and infrastructure development by rich conservatives (read Robert Parry's latest)
to distribute propaganda to the masses.

we cannot write letters and emails.

we need organized INVESTMENT in new media outlets
and clear debate-framing talking points.

..or we are fucked

8. Right.
The editorial support for Kerry is lip-service to make us think we are reading liberal rags. But read the Op-eds in WashPost or NYT and count the STRONG and CLEAR liberal voices and you got Krugman only, or just about. The history of 'reporting' AGAINST Dems is well documented in the Daily Howler. TV networks ARE BushCo, and have been for many years, and that is where most Americans get their information.

But even so most Americans voted for Gore and most voted for Kerry!

13. Attack them where they are must vulnerable
Vote with your dollars, the only votes they really count.

Nothing else will be effective in the long-run because we are unknowingly supporting them.

Support the establishment of a TRUTH-TV network, a media dedicated to truth, factual reality, and honest, non-partisan, reasoned disourse about all matters big and small.

16. I think all the DU effort with Sinclair Broadcasting was a first step in
beating the Media Back. Just got a letter today that Sinclair's license is going to be challenged with it's two TV Stations here in Raleigh and elsewhere in NC...

This is good. When DU'ers get their minds set on something they can move mountains. We've got to go after these Bastards! They have stolen two elections from us. Forget the "Values" thing. It's the MEDIA controlled by Moon, Wingers, Corporatists and Think Tanks. With "silk suited metro sexuals and straightened haired blonde Stepfords who are running America.. Their salaries are in the Millions and they are supposed to be reporting to US? I'm talking about the TV Media but the reporters like Kurtz and Broder and Friedman and the rest are hurting for homes on Nantucket and "Media Rooms" either.... While the rest of us lose jobs overseas and have health care costs going through the roof the MEDIA dines on the Best...they care Shit about the people they are reporting to because they are owned and groomed by the "Powers that Be."
