Running away is not an option.
Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 11:32 AM by kick-ass-bob
I have seen many people saying that they are leaving (the US, and DU I suppose) because they cannot handle it here anymore. Well, I'm sorry to say, that really won't help anyone.

Remember back in '92 how the pugs were in tatters and everyone was talking about how there was only one party left. Did they leave? No, they rebounded, and so will we. Do you see what the Right did? They appealed to the center to regain control, and then fervently moved to the right - while the centrists were (and still are) napping.

We have to wake them up, appeal to their 'values' if you will, and woo them away from the Right. If we only wake them up to the Right, then the right will again move back to the center to recapture them. So the left must appeal to those and let them know that we aren't taking their Guns and Bibles away (lord knows I don't want them) and then we can accomplish the mission that we are all out to achieve.

You cannot do this by running away from this country, because Americans don't want to listen to people living outside their country telling them how to run their country. And even by leaving, you are not escaping the United States of America. Everyone in the world has an Idea for what the US should be like, but the only ones that can truly change it are the people residing right here, inside its borders. If you leave, you surrender. You give up on the principles you believe in. That is never good. It makes you feel hollow inside.

Yes, the republicans have extended their lead in Congress - but it is not all due to a shift in America, some (like in Texas) is due to a shift in arbitrary lines drawn by one man.

Here in NC, the State House and Senate and Governorship are now all Democratic, and more Dem than it was last election. All grassroots movements start small and work larger - and that is what we have started - more people are interested, more are involved. I spent Tuesday in district 01-50 here in Raleigh NC helping people figure out how to vote and to use the ballot. This is a district that is almost 100% afro-american, and I saw dozens and dozens of first time voters - all with extremely strong opinions, and not just for the President. To leave now is to abandon this movement that has been started just at the point where the momentum is really kicking in.

Running away now is not an option.

2. No running away is what Bush did from the TNG!
Do you want to be seen as a coward? Worse yet, do you want to ALWAYS know in your heart of hearts, that you ran away? Attack problems HEAD ON, not HEAD UP THE ASS!

4. Oh yeah? They'll have to FIND me in the rainforest of Costa Rica first...
I'm not going for 11 years (when I retire) but the plan has always been to retire there.

I'm thinking getting out of the country will be a good thing...especially by then.

I will not let myself be used financially to support the christian regime and it furher. If the repukes get the super majority in 2006, I doubt there will be anything left of this country worth fight for.

8. Unless you have draft able kids
Sorry but they come first, the rest need to stay and fight. While we helped the Germans when they had their fascist govt there is no one to help us, we need to do it ourselves.

12. Or if you're gay and afraid.
I have gay friends. They're scared, and not without good reason. They've become the target of demonization by the Talibornagain right.

Anybody who fears for their safety or their quality of life should leave, or at least make plans to leave -- they're probably right to be frightened. If your lifestyle or political activities make you feel in jeopardy -- you need to figure out a way to protect yourself, and if leaving the U.S. is the only way you'll feel safe, by all means go. I'll fill the thermos and make you some sandwiches for the flight.

The rest of us, those of us who aren't going to be targets of hatred, we have work to do. But please, please don't make blanket statements about leaving, that's all I'm asking. Some people really will lose their quality of life if they stay. It's cruel to ask them to do that.

16. If we open our mouths, we are all targets of hatred.
I fail to see the point. Should all Muslims leave this country? All blacks? All Jews?

They have all seen hatred and refuse to leave, so I don't think gays should either. Protecting oneself is one thing, protecting future generations is something else.
What about those kids born in the US that are gay? Who will be left to fight for them?
Sorry, oneself is not as important as equality for all of mankind.

22. I know it's unlikely that anybody will come after me.
But even if I thought so, I might not leave.

That being said, I'm not going to ask anybody else to make that decision -- if they fear for their safety, security or sanity, I'd feel better if they went. Why ask somebody to spend the next four years or more huddled in their home, frightened for their life or security?

Me, I can't do it.

It's kind of funny...I have posted some threads that were an attempt to be uplifting or at least to try to light a fire under our asses, but they sink like lead. The ones about being beaten stay active for hours. Well, it's not kind of funny. Oh well, it's still early.

I have a family too - and I thought it would be better to leave as well - for a fleeting moment. Then I thought - why should I leave when others in the same situation cannot? Who will help them?

21. Got this message from Mothers Opposing Bush...
And it lifted my spirits -- and makes me feel energized again. There is part of me that hates the idea of raising my children in this mess, but at the same time, I want to fight to get this country back:

"Hope is a state of mind, not of the world. Hope, in this deep and
powerful sense, is not the same as joy that things are going well, or
willingness to invest in enterprises that are obviously heading for
success -- but rather an ability to work for something because it is good."
-Vaclav Havel, President, Czech Republic 1989-92

Our hearts are with all of you. To quote a passage from a recent article by Hearst White House reporter Helen Thomas: "Bush undoubtedly will see his reelection as a mandate to push the country further to the right. And if he is elected, he will be answerable to no one."

Well, this president may think he can run his own show, but we know he must answer to our sprawling organization of women who care deeply about issues that hit close to the hearts of our families. We all feel sad, and shocked, at the outcome of this historic presidential race. Yet, we must face this loss with courage and with strength. And we must double our resolve to speak out on inequities and injustices. The MOBsters are undeterred in our mission to push for legislation and policies that protect our children and their futures.

Please take comfort in the fact that our large and loving MOB is not dissipating. We are pow-wowing in Annapolis this week and will be back to you shortly with some ideas on how MOBsters might re-group and resurrect our mission. Our work has just begun. Hold your heads high and know your power!
With love and gratitude from MOB Central

23. I need to leave for my health!
I have health care issues and can't afford my own health insurance.

So my options are:

1. Stay in a corporate job and have my income steadily eroded by insurance costs that rise faster than my salary.

2. Move to a country with universal health care.

I'm 49 and can't wait around for this country to get it's act together.

25. I agree with you, but this is how I feel right now:
I've decided to join the rest of the ignorant, lazy, selfish, insecure, and scared Americans who re-elected one of the worst presidents in history.

From now on, I'm not speaking out against the meanness I once couldn't even imagine would come from the right wing. I'll keep my mouth shut like the rest of the country, even when I disagree, because I wouldn't want to end up saying something unpopular.

I've had enough of hearing all the hate and vitriol from the right. These people who call themselves Christians and twist the Bible for their political purposes represent the worst of kind of deceit.

This is the government our country wants -- it will keep getting what it deserves. I don't care about these people anymore. Like the rest of them, if it doesn't affect my backyard, it doesn't matter to me.

You win. Enjoy the new America. I'm off to Wal-Mart to get the entire LaHay and Jenkins library so I will know how to vote next time.

it makes me angry, because it makes it just that little bit harder for the rest of us who plan to stay and fight.
