Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards (news - web sites), was diagnosed with breast cancer the day her husband and Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites) conceded the presidential race.

Spokesman David Ginsberg said Mrs. Edwards, 55, discovered a lump in her right breast while on a campaign trip last week. Her family doctor told her Friday that it appeared to be cancerous and advised her to see a specialist when she could.

She put off the appointment until Wednesday so as to not miss campaign time. Mrs. Edwards had a needle biopsy performed at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where Dr. Barbara Smith confirmed the cancer, Ginsberg said.

He said the cancer was diagnosed as invasive ductal cancer. That is the most common type of breast cancer, and can spread from the milk ducts to other parts of the breast or beyond.

9. (((((Elizabeth)))))
Thank you for sacrificing what surely must have been an opportunity for earlier treatment to fight for my cause. Hugs and prayers for you. And all the good thoughts of the universe (even though I know you likely will never see this).

14. just when we thought this week couldn't get any worse...
Hopefully, it was caught early. She'll be in my prayers tonight.

Speaking of Elizabeth, do you all remember when the K/E train went through Lawrence, KS in the middle of the night and didn't stop? John and Elizabeth went back later in the week, despite the fact that there wasn't a prayer that they'd win the state to thank the people who'd waited so long to see them. Elizabeth wrote beautifully about that visit on the Kerry blog.

Douglas County - granted, the home of KU and much more liberal than the rest of the state - was one of only two counties in Kansas carried by our ticket. A nice ending, I guess, to that particular story of the campaign.

18. Unfortunately, breast cancer is all too common. It matters whether there
is lymph node involvement, and if so, whether the cancer is contained within the lymph node. It is possible to have lymph node involvement that is contained and to beat breast cancer, be a long term survivor--more than 10 years in many cases--even when your prognosis is only fairly good. I hope she does not have a mastectomy, if it is not necesssary. The surviror rate is actually better for those who have lumpectomy than mastectomy--even though not everyone is a good candidate for a lumpectomy, most are.

With cancer, it depends on whether your type of cancer is aggressive or not; this makes all the difference. I fervently Elizabeth has the latter type of cancer. She is a marvelous wife, mother and campaigner for our democratic values. I wish her all the best.

21. Aw jeez, not this shit again.
Coming on the day of conceding, and after having lost a child, I guess the God of the red-staters didn't think good people like the Edwardses had suffered enough.

OTOH, you can be an agressively stupid, cruel and violent thug and be given every the keys to the world. I see.

Up is down, etc...

P.S. Pull through, Elizabeth!
