Austin, Texas) A State Board of Education member on Thursday called on some publishers to change their health textbooks up for state approval so the books clearly say that marriage is between a man or a woman.
Terri Leo (R-Spring), said the books now attempt to nullify Texas' law banning the recognition of same-sex civil unions because they use terms like "married partners" but do not define marriage as an institution between a man and a woman.
She said if the publishers do not make the change, she would insist on specific changes to the books.
"The flow of the argument, the flow of the text has to be in the readers' mind, a child's mind (that) we are talking about a man and a woman," Leo said. "I want the reader, the child to know that marriage is between a man and a woman."
