The attack on the media starts now
Let's face it we lost to the 4th branch of the Gov. It was Kerry is a flip/flopper, pro gay, gun control, un-patriotic, traitor.. yadda yadda yadda..

We must find a way to control the media. This is the main principle of revolution. I hope this thread will serve to enlist ideas on our war against the media. We made a little impact on the Sinclair smear campaign but it was a small victory. I am talking big here, Fox Media.

I suggest we do not limit ourselves with "taking the high road" I really think we need to "dirty" ourselves this time. The distaste of being like "them" will fade with the victory we will win.

2. DO THIS NOW!
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 11:36 AM by itzamirakul
One of the site administrators has posted a click through list of media contacts, tv as well as print and radio. Go click through two or three of them and send emails to selected stations and papers telling them that you dispute the fact that Bush has a mandate. I say "you" because obviously no one of us can speak for all. If enough of us do this they will begin to get the idea that Bush DOES NOT HAVE A MANDATE.

Let's quit bitching to each other for a few minutes and do something worthwhile! Let's start NOW! This is something we can all do. Just write to the tv stations and newspapers that you find the most aggravating. Don't try to do them all unless you have all day. Don't forget, a lot of stations won't take mass mailings, so we need to do this individually.

3. I know everyone is in shock, still, but we soon have to organize efforts
The RW knows how to concentrate and focus their efforts without become diverted from the priorities. The media cost us in 2000. They clearly cost us in 2004. The television media MUST be a priority focus for us.

I sent an email to George Soros (georgesoros.com) and thanked him for his efforts, but cited a recent article from Robert Parry that really lays out how devastating the role of the media has been. I told Mr. Soros that we were desperate for focused help in this area and that we not only dream on the left that major liberal-leaning financiers like himself and perhaps Ted Turner and others might repurchase CNN or another outlet and bring back journalistic integrity to the major airwaves. I also said we needed major lobbying help in getting a restoration of the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE.

Soros is going to maintain his website, which is a good sign, IMO. He got my email and though I don't expect a personal reply--perhaps if he hears similar form others, he will consider this a logical priority area for his $$. The letter on Soros' site makes it pretty clear that he too is devastated. Now's the time to give him our thoughts on how he might best help, IMO. Please be very very gracious. Soros was as excoriated by the RW as any other figure, yet he stood by us in a very big way.

4. It isn't enough to boycott
WE HAVE TO BE SEEN AND HEARD FROM. I would love to see 100000 protestors surround some of the media corporate headquartes.

Also and I know this is going to controversial but I think we have to push for the draft. One thing that they had in Viet Nam era that we didn't is the fear of dying in war. Those fuckers use fear we throw it right back at them.

6. I'm not sure any of us would have to push for the draft.. it seems all but
inevitable now.....

I agree with the impact on apathy that will come with a renewed draft, but I don't think that we, as democrats want to be tagged with "demanding it." What we need to do is insist that Bush* address the need for additional forces to support/protect those already there. Let him figure out where they are coming from! He is not going to have a choice.

7. I did a couple of small things right away
I know it's not much, but I was so angry I had to do something. I programmed all four cable news stations (CNN, CNN Headline News, Faux News, and MSNBC) out of my TV, immediately following up with a letter to each (except Faux) explaining what I had done and why. It won't matter to them, but it means a LOT to me. I don't need them. I have the 'Internets' and find DU, Buzzflash, Atrios, AmericaBlog, Daily Kos, etc. to be a whole lot more valuable, timely, and trustworthy.

The only exception I am making with those four channels is 'Countdown' with Keith Olbermann. I record that show and my family watches it together. Keith has earned his audience, IMO, the other cable news shows deserve none. Between Jon Stewart's 'The Daily Show' and 'Countdown', my kids and I get all of the TV news that we require to keep us informed.

I will be happy to join in with any larger plans to impact the MSM on TV. I've been following the 'Boycott Business Supporting Repubs' threads and am looking forward to making a statement with local shopping boycotts, too. It's the principle of it all.

It's the only show on TV that we trust.

11. Okay, thanks! We'll give it a try.
We also like C-Span for unbiased coverage of events such as the debates (which my kids LOVED) and the protests in NYC. I don't know why we haven't paid more attention to news shows on PBS, but we'll give 'Now' a try. Thanks, again! :hi:

8. The way to the heart of the media
Is DIRECTLY through their sponsors and advertisers.
We KNOW this from the pressure we put on Sinclair's advertisers.....it WORKED before - it CAN work again.

Target ONE corporation - and we should flood their phonelines and emails and REFUSE to use their services, or buy their products.....sell off any stocks etc.....

Explain to them that this is a DIRECT result of supporting Bush.

10. You think they give a fuck?
Not only was Bush handed a "mandate" but so has the media. "This Republican ball licking is approved by 59 million American voters." Boycott all you want, that don't mean shit. It is not the actual boycott that works, but attention to the boycott. If the media makes the boycott an issue that the boycott becomes important, otherwise the tree falls in the woods makes a loud bang but nobody hears it.

12. I believe you are correct
I think boycotts work temporarily till they find the next lie to propagate. We need to make them evil. Some how they need to be discredited. They have to be the target of the right wingers irk. I am talking about anything it takes. Just remember in this "Amurka" the truth doesn't have to be true, just repeated enough times.
