why does Gen X vote Repuke?
Didn't they vote for Clinton in large numbers in 92, they never faced the possibility of a draft

1. I blame Michael J Fox and Huey Newton
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 04:51 PM by htuttle
Of course, Michael J Fox is a Democrat now. He STILL doesn't have any Elvis in him, however.

on edit:

Oh, and Gordon Gecko, too. It's partly his fault.

9. Honestly, I think Fox was always a Democrat.
Looking at newsmeat, he has donated to Democrats as far back as 1990. He did donate to Arlen Spector however. Though I wouldn't blame Michael J. Fox. I would blame Alex P. Keaton. ;)

Elvis is in everybody out there.
Everybody's got Elvis in them!
Everybody except one person that is...
Yeah, one person!
The evil opposite of Elvis.
The Anti-Elvis
Anti-Elvis got no Elvis in 'em,
lemme tell ya.
Michael J. Fox has no Elvis in him.
And Elvis is in Joan Rivers
but he's trying to get out, man!
He's trying to get out!
Listen up Joanie Baby!
Elvis is everywhere
Elvis is everything
Elvis is everybody
Elvis is still the king

5. They are Reagan era disciples
They identify with greed, avarice, and the unregulated free market mentality. Still waiting for big shoulder pads and big hair to return from the '80's.

(And for all you GenX-ers who take offence to this post, I'm one of you, too. So congrats for fighting the trend of your peers!)

26. Which generation voted for Reagan?
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 05:27 PM by Jackie97
It was not Generation X or Y. It was the boomers and their elders who voted Reagan in not just once, but twice. The American Boomers were obviously not as liberal as we all thought. Either that, or many of them changed because they knew they had the luxury to change.

Seriously, I'm fed up with all the finger pointing at Generation X with little to no finger pointing at the conservative part of the Baby boomer generation.

Give up this myth that the boomers are an enlightened generation. They're as diverse in America as we X and Yers are.

The truth is that more younger people are together with men of the opposite race, are more pro-choice (from what I've read), etc. They're actually more progressive than their boomer parents because progressive attitudes were taught to the kids by then and society.

And the truth is that you all's finger pointing at the younger generation makes them feel isolated and does nothing but DIVIDE THE LEFT. It's about how the white people of the left often make the black leftists feel alienated. Well, older people who bash youth (and their youthful allies) are alienating leftist youth. I'm sick of it. We don't need division right now. We need to be UNITED.

they either are greedy ...and remember greed crosses all boundaries ..

or they are hateful of something...like gays, women, and kids who get state sponsored healthcare.

21. Or they are immune to any sense of cognitive dissonance
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 05:16 PM by End of all Hope
I was throwing things at the television screen when I saw the western Kentucky returns this Tuesday. They were the last votes to be counted and until then Mongiardo was ahead of Bunning by several percentage points. Those precincts went to Bush as well, and went to the polls no doubt on the way from receiving their welfare checks and food stamps.

24. why does genx vote Repuke?
They grew up on violent video games (as much as early generations grew up on radio, TV, or John Wayne movies) where nobody dies. You get a do over. They don't realize, as those of us who remember youth, death comes to all of us. When you're young you don't believe that death is for you. It's for old people. It's for people who don't follow the rules. They think if you follow all of the rules and are good you won't die. News flash: good, honest, decent people die young too.

25. I think a lot of them did vote for Kerry.
In fact, I'll go as far as saying that I think most of them did vote for Kerry.

I think the ones who didn't are probably just following the BS that they're parents indoctrinate them with about the Republican party being the best one.

29. Good question. My generation is the one that's ruining everything.
Want to know my theory? We're spoiled. Totally spoiled.

We were teens in the 80's - it really WAS the "me!" decade. Everything was about money and status.

In the 90's, we had Clinton. Everything was so cushy - the economy was doing well, pop culture and technology really exploded. It became even easier to just be immersed in your own life. Most didn't follow, nor care, about politics or world events. They paid marginal attention and maybe voted, but that was about it. BUT, (and this is the biggest thing) - we were moving progressively forward in so many areas that I think for many of my generation they just cannot imagine nor fathom things really being "all that bad". I think that is what it mostly boils down to - black and white views of the world with us as the beacon of goodness and democracy. They don't even realize we're not even a democracy anymore, because we take it for granted more than any generation ever has. We're also full of warmongers - too young to remember much about Vietnam, Gulf War I was "short and sweet" - the NEW way war would be. I don't doubt for ONE minute that the majority of people in my generation thought that we'd roll over Iraq within hours and that would be that.

And there you have it. I apologize for my generation.
