Repuke Bitches Threaten Senate Dems on Judgeships
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 07:30 PM by jefferson_dem
Um...fuck them. Must stand on principle and use every mechanism at your disposal, Dems. America's future hangs in the balance.

WASHINGTON - In a psychological war of words, Senate Republicans are issuing only slightly veiled threats against their Democratic counterparts if the minority party resuscitates its penchant for blocking President Bush (news - web sites)'s choices for federal judgeships.

Learn from the election defeat of Minority Leader Tom Daschle, the Republicans say, contending it was Democratic "judicial obstructionism" that led to a variety of GOP victories and Daschle's downfall on Election Day. The not-so-subtle message: Let conservatives have their way when it comes to judicial picks, or you too will face the wrath of voters.

But Senate Democrats, though diminished in number by four, see no link between the election losses and Bush's judicial nominees and plan to stand their ground. More filibusters should be expected if Bush tries to put someone too conservative on the Supreme Court or other top courts. With Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist seriously ailing from thyroid cancer, Bush could make a court appointment soon.

Based on raw numbers, Democrats still can make a filibuster stick, since it takes 60 votes to overcome one. The new Senate will have 55 Republicans, 44 Democrats and one Democrat-leaning independent. The GOP would have to persuade five Democrats to defect on a filibuster to break it.

3. well thank God for small favors - at least that. they better hold their
ground each and every time; we can't afford the backward slide that Chimp's judicial appointments would lead to.
Fuckin' moron. Yeah he'll lead us alright - right back to the bronze age.

12. The two bitches from WA state will cave
and I hope I am wrong -- but these broads have no backbone.

Murphy on one critical vote crossed over to vote with the GOP most likely more than that one I know about.

22. Not bloody likely...
Patty Murray (not "Murphy" as you put it) was one of the few senators with the guts to stand up and vote against the IWR...even when Kerry and Hillary didn't. For this, she got the Clelland Treatment from her opponent this election, with ads equating her and Osama, and suggesting she approved of the 9/11 attacks. She won easily, anyway.

7. Fear, fear, fear, fear, threats, threats, threats, threats...
It is all they know. Do it our way "or else".

Hopefully the senate democrats know better. Their party wasn't afraid on November 2 and they better not be for the next 4 years.

11. The democratic party needs to get the facts out on this.
There has been no obstructionism by the democrats. Bush has had the highest percentage of judicial nominees confirmed of any president in modern history. In one term Bush has appointed and had confirmed a higher percentage of all the federal district judges than Clinton did in two terms. And the vacancy rate on the federal bench is near the lowest it has been in years. Every democrat needs to mention these facts every time this topic comes up.

15. Totally true. And we know many of Clinton's nominees never even made
it out of committee, much less to a floor debate at all. So fuck their hollow claims of mandate and whimpering about obstructionism.

14. Here's a list of those Sens who are up for re-election in 2006
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 07:55 PM by jefferson_dem
Among the Dems, really there are not many vulnerables that i see. Maybe Stabenow, Dayton, Nelson (NB), and perhaps Neslson (FL). The rest would seem to be safe. Snowe in Maine is up, and rumor is that she will be challenged in the primary from the right unless she toes the Chimp line. Don't think she'll go down in the primary but i worry the threat may stifle her will to challenge a bit. Not sure if there are any viable Dems in Maine to force her hand.

Stand up to these bastards for a change!

It's the only job they have. It's time to start doing it.

18. My two Senators to GOP: sod off.
I'm quite fortunate to have Lautenberg and Corzine, who couldn't give a flying petuny about their "veiled threats".

Allow me to :loveya: about Corzine again. He's turned out to be such a pleasure.

If so, Menendez sure would be a nice replacement.

24. BINGO. We must make ourselves heard on this,
I plan on calling each and every single Democratic senator on this.

I personally will let them know: I will take a LOT of disappointment and compromise on other issues, but my foot goes down on appointments that could last 30 years or more. If the Senate Democrats let me down without a fight on Supreme Court appointees, I QUIT. No more campaigning, no more money, no more voting. I'm done.

21. Fat chance this will work...

Democrats know well that Daschle was an isolated case, being a perpetually-endangered Democrat in a solid-red state.

DailyKos (I think) pointed out that the Democrats in the Senate, although reduced in number, are likely to be a stronger group than last time around. The places where they lost seats were generally extremely Republican states (Georgia, Louisiana, etc.), which meant they had to not be too "liberal" in their actions or risk offending the folks back home. The remaining leadership will, by and large come from bluer states, and can thus defy Bush more freely, knowing that they aren't putting their own political careers at risk if they do.
