5. Can't vouch for the accuracy of the stat,
but it would not surprise me if it were accurate. The theory of evolution, the foundation for modern biochemistry, biology and genetics is not even taught in many schools. It's only going to get worse. Whatever scientific or technological breakthoughs we may get in the future will come from foreign scientists and engineers.

50. Jesus had an "attitude"
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 09:32 PM by mesquite
about a significant percentage of his fellow citizens who claimed to be "doing God's will" - the Pharisees.

I don't know what the percentage was, but it was enough to exert a lot of control over the people to keep them poor, subjected and obsessing about other peoples' "morals."

Nonetheless, Jesus never stopped railing against them and he never stopped telling the truth about them.

edit: the 47% number comes from a 1994 Gallup poll on the subject. They did the same poll in '97, and came up with 44% believing "God created man pretty much in his present form at one time within the last 10,000 years."

59. That's because they
follow the teachings of Paul not Jesus.

Not the first to make this observation, although I learned it from first hand experience.

Thomas Jefferson on Paul: "Paul was the first corrupter of the doctrines of Jesus."

Albert Schweitzer on Paul: "Where possible Paul avoids quoting the teaching of Jesus, in fact even mentioning it. If we had to rely on Paul, we should not know that Jesus taught in parables, had delivered the sermon on the mount, and had taught His disciples the 'Our Father.' Even where they are specially relevant, Paul passes over the words of the Lord."

Will Durant on Paul: "Paul created a theology of which none but the vaguest warrants can be found in the words of Christ." "Fundamentalism is the triumph of Paul over Christ."

Walter Kaufmann (Professor of Philosophy, Princeton) on Paul: "Paul substituted faith in Christ for the Christlike life."

George Bernard Shaw on Paul: "No sooner had Jesus knocked over the dragon of superstition than Paul boldly set it on its legs again in the name of Jesus."

Jeremy Bentham (English Philosopher) on Paul: "If Christianity needed an Anti-Christ, they needed look no farther than Paul."

Thomas Hardy on Paul: "The new testament was less a Christiad than a Pauliad."

Carl Jung on Paul: "Paul hardly ever allows the real Jesus of Nazareth to get a word in."

Bishop John S. Spong on Paul: "Paul's words are not the Words of God. They are the words of Paul- a vast difference."

area). We were blue this election. However, members of our Board of Education have recommended that the Bible be distributed to all students, that evolution not be taught in the schools (and creationism be taught) and that books that might be considered immoral (by?) be banned from the school. There are some really whacked out talibornagains on our board. They are awful, and it is going to be hard to get the three worst ones out. But it seems that the community is willing to fight (yes!).

Jesus was a Capricorn
He ate organic food
He believed in love and peace
And never wore no shoes
Long hair, beard and sandles
And a funky bunch of friends
Reckon we'd just nail him up
If he came down again

Chorus:
'Cause everybody's gotta have somebody to look down on
Who they can feel better than at any time they please
Someone doin' somethin' dirty decent folks can frown on
If you can't find nobody else, then help yourself to me.

Eggheads cussing rednecks cussing
Hippies for their hair
Others laugh at straights who laugh at
Freaks who laugh at squares
Some folks hate the Whites
Who hate the Blacks who hate the Klan
Most of us hate anything that
We don't understand
Chorus
