Hey, can we stop the youth bashing PLEASE?
I'm getting really fucking sick and tired of the "adults" on this board bashing "newbies" and "first time voters" for any and everything. "Oh they don't know anything about Kerry"..."Oh they don't know anything about elections".

We (18-24 year olds) turned out almost 70% of our age group, and overwhelmingly voted for Kerry.

So can we stop already with the pompous insults towards young voters, please? If you "adults" keep acting like such assholes and putting us down like this, there REALLY won't be any future progressives.

11. 17% Increase in Medicare and Sky High Prescription Drugs?
Nope, wasn't them. When I voted that was ALL I saw, Seniors. And Bush DIDN'T WIN WHERE I LIVE.

2. MISPRINT: "turned out almost 70% of our age group"

Young voters fail to turn out in expected numbers

This was not the breakout year for young voters that some had anticipated. Fewer than one in 10 voters Tuesday were 18 to 24, about the same proportion of the electorate as in 2000, exit polls indicated.

Editorial: Emory Wheel November 05, 2004

Did you get lost on the way to the polls? Where were the youth?

Jaclyn Barbarow

What happened to America Tuesday night? Rather, what happened to the 18- to 24-year-olds who were so fired up about the election? The Great White Hope of the Kerry campaign met the isolationist apathy of the Emory bubble, and logic just slipped away. Just 36 percent of us, the “youth voters,” could squeeze an hour out of our schedules, just once every four years, to have some say in our country — and to protect the integrity of our neighbors’ lives. When did we become so selfish?

<SNIP>

On behalf of the 40.6 million Americans between the ages of 18 and 29, I’m sorry. I’m sorry that your brother died in Iraq. I’m sorry that you can’t get a flu shot for your 10-year-old. I’m sorry that Georgia’s constitution labels you as sub-citizen. And I look toward the Georgia Supreme Court battle that is sure to ensue over the homophobic amendment to our constitution.

Jaclyn Barbarow is a College junior from Lake Mary, Fla.

4. I think your numbers are off....
51.6 turnout among 18-29 year olds, who voted 55% for Kerry.

I'd be surprised if 18-24 year olds are much higher than the average for the larger group.

8. Only 51.6%...
Again, I heard 67%.

And as you say, that link cites 18-29 year olds voted 55% for Kerry.

My point is, the older people on this board need to chill the hell out with the youth bashing. The majority of us are Dems (or left-leaning) and we help elect Democrats. Quit being such assholes already.

9. What did I ever say against youth?
you should calm down a bit. This gay man isn't feeling too sympathetic over your alleged grievance.

7. i am wiht you dude or dudette, but i think it initiated from rove
spillled to the media who in turn du pick up on and attacked. i spent a lot of time with the youth. i was very proud of them. and thank them. and i am seeing that they are becoming even more active. my own kids i love so how they are a part of the system, thinking and mulling over what they see, not just being fed. drawing their own conclusions and standing up to opposition. i say thank you to the youth in this years election, and shame on the adults that feel this is a productive way of inspiring youth to particpate. further, with an election stolen, it should encourage more youth to apathy, i hope that all will become enrage their voice wasnt heard, and work harder for their future

10. Mother of 20 and 25 year olds
Bash? NO, we are PROUD of you young people. I came of age in the 60s and I can see my generation now in you. My 20 year old college daughter registered and requested absentee ballot BACK IN MARCH. Had a LOT OF PROBLEMS doing this, but she didn't STOP until she accomplished it. THAT IS MOTIVATED. My 25 year old, who I practically had to THROW in my car and drive her to vote last election, got up few hours early for work and went herself this time.

You MAKE US PROUD. Keep it up, even MORE important NOW. Don't be discouraged. We will WIN again.
