Bartering.... I need your help, please! Let's do this Jen6!
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 10:05 PM by tlcandie
I have created a website that will link/list all of the wonderful things Jen6 started in her, "Starve the Beast" thread and all those wonderful people who participated!

I need to have people reply here who have services they can barter! We need to establish a privacy boundary. I'm thinking it would maybe look something like this:

C.Stuart Tampa, Florida area

Service: Website design

exCHANGE: Housecleaning services, landscape maintenance, handyman work

Contact: cstuart@HELP.com

Please give me your feedback here and LIST so we can get this started! This site will have links/lists for inspiration and ALL areas of life including Jen6's thread, other threads listed herein AND more!

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x2600099

 Thanks everyone!! It's totally free and I am not looking to make money...it is truly to help bring about a TRUE change!

I plan on creating a list, but I need a little more time to think about it. Deserves a kick though.

6. GREAT!!
I posted a link to what I have on the main page. It's only begun, but I want to get the bartering up ASAP while filling in the blanks on the rest of it!

Here's the website...I'm not a professional web designer! :+ It's really simple, but I think it will work. All positive feedback appreciated!

5. Have you talked to an accountant yet?
Edited on Fri Nov-05-04 10:07 PM by Carni
Unfortunately I am not an accountant or else I would offer my services... but I know the IRS considers barters taxable just like cash, or at least they used to in the 80's when our business belonged to a trade association--which was basically a bunch of businesses that got together and traded in a same as cash way.

When you joined you paid a certain amount to the association and then got so many "trade dollars" then they gave you a credit card looking thing that you could use with other members of the trade association.

As they used you-you accumulated more trade dollars on your card to use with other trade members and the association charged 10% on whatever you took in--to get to the point at the end of the year we had to declare whatever trade jobs we did as income (which sucked--
I think they issued us a 1099 although I may be mentioning the wrong form name)

Bottom line is I am just mentioning this because it's on the net and not private if you know what I mean and I am sure bush co is just looking for reasons to audit the opposition so you might want to check and make sure you guys are in the clear with this.

Not trying to be a kill joy because I think it's a great idea!

7. Thanks!
I will look up the law on this and post it, I'm only providing the access/links. I'm not looking for kickback, coin, or services of any kind. This is between this person and whomever they share/barter with!

Maybe instead of bartering we could say services to exchange or use a different approach... ideas?

8. BE VERY VERY CAREFUL.. This is the stuff of tax nightmares
The best bartering is "casual bartering"..p2p, if you will..

An auto mechanic who "takes a look at" the car of a dentist, who "takes a look" at the orthodontic needs of the mechanic's kid..

anything more sophisticated than that kind of bartering will bring a flurry of IRS troubles.

10. So, how do you word this?
I just want to connect everyone up and the rest is up to them! Whether they do or don't...that is their choice!

Thanks for your input! I totally respect the advice, wisdom, maturity, and professionalism found within DU!

13. I think a better approach would be to just list like minded people
Do a site listing like minded business people who want to advertise.

I would just scrap the barter, or services exchange idea (per say) because all you are doing is putting people in touch with people and if they happen to do a service, or own a business, they might want to advertise that service (no tax laws against advertising ones talents)

Do you know what I mean? ;)

14. I do a newsletter for my bowling leagues
and I have a section called : "Who Does What?"

People who want to can give me their business cards, and I list them..

example:

Didyaknow?

Joe XXXX (team #9) is a journeyman plumber?
Sue XXXX (Team #25) has her own tax preparation service?
John XXX (Team #14) installs furnaces and air conditioners for the school district
Steve xx (Team #4) is a roofer for XXX & Co
Carlos xx (Team #30) is a lawyer with XXX & Associates..
Lindsay xx (Team # 2) sells Hondas at XXX Honda dealership
There have been lots of "meet ups" but no one but the two of them knows the "arrangements".. maybe just advoce..maybe more..it's between them alone

What started this was when we had AC trouble.. I was boo-hooing about my huge bill, and the guy bowling next to us, said.."Hey, you should have called ME..I would have taken a look at it for FREE".

16. Gotcha!! We will change it then ..
I was thinking of calling it services and you are so right that it is between them alone!

Well, so far no takers, so we will see! I would really like to get a list of people in various states that people could access.. free advertising and no takers.. Interesting! :+

12. I posted this on the other thread, but find it worth repeating
elow is a loosely organize group: Freecycle. They trade and give away stuff...any stuff for free. Google them for a local chapter.

FREECYCLE
Freecycle is open to individuals who want to "recycle" that special something rather than throw it away. Whether it's a chair, a fax machine, piano or an old door. Or maybe you're looking to acquire something yourself! But everything must be free.

The goal of Freecycle is to reduce waste by connecting individuals who are throwing away goods with others who are seeking them. Whether you're looking to discard or acquire an item, Winston-Salem Area Freecycle is the way to do it. Furniture, clothing, appliances, computers, old windows, and all the little things in between.

Freecyclers are a tireless group of optimists who believe they can change the world one gift at a time.

Use common sense in posting. Inappropriate posts will be removed and the offending party will be either warned or banned from posting. Thanks for your co-operation.

This site is a part of Yahoo Groups and the group's ownership is not affiliated in any way with any government or business entity, other than The Freecycle Network, an incorporated nonprofit.

18. I wish you well
If this could happen on a grand scale it would be awesome.

Right now i live in a radical Red town, work for Repubs and my income is coming from the hard core koolaid drinkers. Since the election, I can barely stay out of trouble. I don't know how much longer I can withstand the bullshit.

It's always paycheck to paycheck. Is there anyway we could gather info for Blue businesses? Hire the blue? I really don't want to taint my self respect having to survive.

There's a hell of a lot of minimum wage workers that could get motivated by jobs.

I would like to see all the servers and minimum wagers go on strike. Let them fix their own quickie lunches and prayer meetin coffee.

19. Well, that is just ONE of the reasons I'm doing the website...
but it seems for all everyone's talk I"m not getting anyone to put onto any list of services via states at minimal with e-mail addresses for contact, etc.

If we want change and to Starve the Beast...I need your help. Please PM me if you don't want it placed within this thread..thanks!

20. in doing this with such organized effort, may want to consider TAX
I think...I THINK the trading of services is fine, but the IRS and state revenue offices tend to be interested in and go after bartering methods as a "tax evasion" scheme. So...may want to bone up on that. HOw do you not make undue trouble for yourselves as we go forward in our attempt to get off the economic grid for a bit and STARVE THE BEAST of "the ever-growing economy".
