When I turned Maher on I was thinking we wouldn't get any good anger out of him. He and Hughly have gotten some good rants in.

I waited on DL a couple of weeks ago. He was very cool to me.

Listen you can challenge Chomsky and disagree and even demonize him if you want to but you should allow him a chance to defend himself and his position. To let someone like Sullivan define what Noam believes and for Maher not to counter that upset me a bit. It was like the old Buckley Chomsky debates all over again except that they had put Noam in a straight jacket and gagged him. Not fair at all.

The ONLY time Sully attacks the Right is when they attack Gays, the reason is because he's Gay.

Otherwise, Sullivan is another mAnn Coulterkampf!

All I got to say is to wake up. He has got a very valid point. Condescending to folks who live in Mississippi or Alabama isn't the way to win their damn votes. The only way to win is to build on things we have in common and manage issues we do not have in common such as abortion or gay marriage. The answer is federalism in that case.

I'm a College Democrat in Mississippi. Some of these dumbasses set fire to our parade float over homecoming, but there is no damn point in standing there railing over how stupid and ignorant Mississippi folk are when the real question is how do we build bridges instead of burning them.

After watching this show tonight, a thought came to me that this nation is splitting apart. It was a comical thought and came in a non-serious manner, but the fact that I would even think such a thing shows how polarized this nation is becoming, and railing people because they're podunk redneck dumbasses isn't any better than fundamentalists' hijacking Jesus' message in order to rail, dehumanize gays and split the electorate over "moral values." It's just polarization in opposide directions.

Having said all that, I do disagree with many folks around here when it comes to abortion and gay marriage. I, as a Gnostic Christian, do not judge them for the choices they make because that would take a degree of pride and arrogance that I frankly find offensive because I know that I am no better than them yet no worse than them. I'm a human just like them.

Sully only cares about building bridges he can walk over himself. The only reason he disagreed with Bush at all is the gay rights issue. He wants to have it both ways and his arguments for reaching out to the rest of the country end at those issues which only directly affect him. No wonder he is still a republican even though the base of his own party find his very being to be repugnant.

The common issues probably won't overcome the issues that split us. We've been divided for the last 4 years.

I just shake my head and ask them how in the fuck they can keep voting against their self-interest and the interest of their state by returning these Republican pricks back to office time and time again.

And you know what? It's about fucking time that the red state voters start acknowledging and understanding me as a blue state (CA) resident. Gee....you think they might do that?

Because he completely ignores the fact that they are much more brutal towards liberals than we could ever dream of being towards Christians. In fact, we don't even want this fight. We are delighted for them to build churches and praise Jesus from Bellingham to Biloxi, separation of church and state. That isn't enough for them, they want to take over the government too. They brought this fight to us. They call us America-haters, terrorist sympathizers, immoral, and a whole lot more. We tried to be reasonable in this election and they chose to keep a complete failure in office because they think he was annointed by Jesus. We are right to be angry and if they can ridicule us and then say "just kidding", then why the hell can't we?

And this from somebody who knows we have to find a new platform to reach these people, but it won't happen by capitulating to their crazy-ass beliefs.

Mississippi will never vote Democratic. They are the least educated and poorest people in the US and will continue to go down hill under Republican rule. You would think this would make them vote against the Republicans, wouldn't you? The problem is they can only understand sound bites and are unable to understand any thing deeper than that. Also, the less education one has the less likely one is to challenge those in power.

Andrew Sullivan or whatever his name is should be ashamed for being the one lying and completely distorting what Chomsky is all about. When Sullivan kept saying Chomsky hates America and makes all his money bashing the U.S. and claiming its evil, he is right in one respect... Chomsky does bash the U.S. Government and makes a living of it, but he doesn't do it because he "hates America".. its actually the exact opposite. Chomsky has always said that we live in the greatest country in the world, but I guess that just doesn't register with a hatefilled peice of garbage like Sullivan.

They should have afforded Chomsky the chance to respond or at least have someone on the panel who could accurately describe his positions. Bill ceeded to Sullivan's arguements by saying yes I don't agree that America is the sole cause of evil in the world... Well neither does chomsky but you'd never know it from tonight's discussion. I was very happy with DL though he really did well tonight.

They have 24 hours of CNN, MSNBC, and FOX...

I just would like a chance for the person's or viewpoints that these RWers are attacking to be at least present in the room or on the phone.

Chomsky was attacked by Sullivan with no one on the panel or Bill challenging the false & outrageous accuastions.

DL was as always articulate and a relief to have on the panel.

Chomsky is the preeminent figure of modern linguistics. He was renowned in that discipine well before he started writing about politics. His contributions outside of politics have had a huge impact on philosophy, psychology and anthropology as well. He's a tenured professor at MIT and has been for decades. He has absolutely no need to write about politics.

Moreover, while Chomsky does indeed sell books, his books are always put out by alternative presses. So obviously he doesn't make as much off them as he could. And he gives away a very substantial portion of the money he does make. He once gave thousands of dollars to a lefty bookstore in the Bay Area. He also donates to Bernie Sanders.

In short, unlike Sullivan, Chomsky doesn't depend on his political writings for his livelihood. In fact, Chomsky's career has been at various points threatened by his politics. I've always admired his honesty, sincerity, and compassion.

Nothing at all there I can disagree with.

I've been impressed by him every time I've seen him on there. Sullivan and Alan Simpson were SO defensive. And the thing that irks me is that they sit there and RAIL about how WE demonize and make fun of the "heartland" and "christians" when IT'S A COTTAGE INDUSTRY for their side to demonize US.
