How did this out of touch guy get to be Dean of the Berkeley law school? Another DLC retread from the Clinton admin. :thumbsdown:
Here's what me and Mrs. arendt sent to Bill Moyers:
Dear Mr. Moyers;
We normally agree with your guests, but tonight was a notable exception. We found it initially incomprehensible, and then outrageous, that Professor Edley should chide Democrats about their lack of focus on moral values after we have been subjected to the most immoral administration in our lifetimes.
The hearts of the Democrats we know have not been broken by poorly crafted policies. Their hearts have been broken because the country has sold its soul for the illusion of security and the smugness of being among the elect in a radical interpretation of Christianity. Your grasp of the real issues for Democrats in this campaign is grotesquely distorted if you think we are not motivated by moral issues.
If the President lying to start a war of aggression that has killed tens of thousands is not a moral issue, then what is? If the unilateral restarting of the nuclear arms race is not a moral issue, then what is? If the looting of America by Enron, and the free pass given to that looting by the FERC and the SEC, is not a moral issue, then what is? If slashing police, fire, and education in order to give two huge tax cuts to the super-rich is not a moral issue, then what is? If the subversion of one of the highest ideals upon which this country was built, the separation of Church and State, is not a moral issue, then what is?
The real problem is that the fundamentalist right only has three moral issues: the merging of Church and State, the re-criminalization of homosexuality and abortion. Their morality is only on display in their punishment of others; Mr. Bush being a prime example. Their solution to every problem is to increase sentences, to increase incarceration rates, and to generally terrorize the population into submission. These moralists are blind to the homeless people they step over in the streets, to hungry children, to uninsured sick people, to the victims of corporate swindles and sweatshop labor practices. How is it that the so-called moral Christians can never remember Jesus' injunction:
"Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirst, a stranger or lacking clothes, sick or in prison, and did not come to your help?" Then he will answer, "In truth I tell you, in so far as you neglected to do this to one of the least of these, you neglected to do it to me." Matthew 25:44-45.
Sincerely,
arendt and Mrs. arendt
