1. Isn't Microsoft
the driving force behind salon.com? I thought it was them and that is a pretty liberal magazine IMO.

2. I'm typing on an Apple right now!
I'd recommend them regardless of politics. But it's nice to know Jobs is a Dem supporter and that Gore is on the board.

On the other hand, Rush Limbaugh is also an Apple guy...

3. Someone can correct me, but I thought Gates sort of played both sides....
I know his father was one who came out in support of retaining the so-called "death tax," given the detrimental effect on charity that would come from wealthy no longer having any incentives to donate inheritance. And, the Bill & Melinda Gates FOundation has certainly been very liberal/progressive in its funding initiatives....

I'm no big fan of microsoft, mind you, but am curious what the story is.

24. Microsoft doesn't own Apple.
Check out the 10K (SEC filing): http://secfilings.nasdaq.com/edgar_conv_html%2f2002%2f12%2f19%2f0001047469-02-007674.html#FIS_BUSINESS

Microsoft did purchase some preferred stock in 1997, but it does not own the company, not even close.

14. I've been using an iMac for almost 6 years.
Still works like new. It's never needed repairs, and I've never even had to reload the OS. My second iMac purchased in 2000 is just as reliable. Only thing done to either was to up the RAM. I want to buy one of the newer ones - maybe an eMac - but this wonderful Bushit economy keeps taking all my money.

41. I have, but the UNIX based OSX runs all the Linux apps I used
in Linux. But I would encourage you to give it a try. You will find the Linux community quite friendly and helpful. Linux is more than an OS, it is a new business model.

Linux is solid and really not that hard to learn.

Try open office and GIMP on your Windows machine to get an idea of the quality of open source software. Firefox is excellent open source software.

many, mnay of us are unable to afford them.

To those who would cut their ties to Microsoft I would highly recommend building your own machine. It isn't very hard (really!) and it can be great fun too.

Arstechnica has pre-designed systems just ready for you to buy the parts and put together. Their Budget Box will give you more than enough power for your needs and you can put it together for about $750.
http://arstechnica.com/guides/buyer/system-09-21-2004.ars

Need help? Find a wealth of help from people who really know what they're doing, unlike those tech support lackeys on the other end of the phone with Ars Open Forum.
http://episteme.arstechnica.com

Finally, run an open operating system. Go Linux or BSD. Almost all of them are completely free. Many of them are as easy or easier to use than Microsoft. Further, you won't believe the boatload of software that comes with them that you'd have to pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars for your Windows PC. Here's a great place where you can read detailed reviews and news...
http://distrowatch.com

Oh, and I almost forgot. If you have a Windows PC and just want to try out a Linux system, there's Knoppix. It's a Linux system on a Live CD. Just put the CD in your computer and reboot. Within seconds you'll have a fully functioning Linux system without the need to install anything!

It's too bad. Macs are more reliable.

Also, I get paid to fix other people's computers and need Windows-based computers to keep up. Macs rarely need repairs. :)
