anyone else curious about Chomsky's fees?
on Bill Mahr tonight Andrew Sullivan said Chomsky has made millions in speaking fees for bashing the USA and calling America evil. I wondered what he charged: here's a college student trying to convince others to boycott Student Fee support of Chomsky & Michael Moore--

That being said, we must consider that UGBC has limited funding and resources. It is my understanding that this funding is drawn primarily from the mandatory Student Activity fee of $102 (raised from $100 last year) that is imposed upon every student. Mr. Chomsky was paid to talk at BC at a cost of around $3,000. Michael Moore will be paid $16,500 according to the 9/22 edition of The Observer. These figures are way above any living and travel expenses these guests might incur while visiting the Heights.

1. Sorry, but
I think Andrew Sullivan was probably right. Speakers make a TON of money when they are A) Articulate and B) Crowd pleasing....

He missed the point.

It doesn't make him any less (or more) right!

5. Sullivan is a right wing extremist. He only cares about the Neo Con....
plan to ruin America. Chomsky is an American and Sully is a Brit. That's right, Sully is NOT an American Citizen.

7. $3,000? You have to be kidding me, that's nothing
I'm surprised Chomsky doesn't ask for more!

9. With just 300 students attending
that only comes to $10 per attendee. Chomsky regularly draws crowds of 1,000+ at small schools. $3,000 is really not a big deal.

10. yeah, I was surprised too...
the truth is often more interesting than the accusation-- Sullivan put a question in my head & the truth didn't support it (even at 2 speaking engagements a week, every week, it's not even close to millions). Increased admiration for Noam.

8. Conservative speakers make tons of money too - we live in a world where
money is necessary to get things done. And that's fine with me. Progressives should get paid for their hard work. Michael Moore made millions from F911 - good - he'll put it to good use.

11. I just saw Dr. Chomsky speak in Ann Arbor. It was free,
and open to the public. The University of Michigan is not exactly a left-leaning school, if you know what I mean. I doubt the University paid him much of anything and then allowed the public to join in for free. I could be wrong, of course, but it doesn't seem likely, at all.

Also - Prof. Chomsky does not "bash" the U.S. or call it evil. Andrew Sullivan is a foaming-at-the-mouth, gibbering moron. It's really unfortunate that he, like many from the right side of the spectrum, are so lacking in critical thinking skills and seem to have such difficulty understanding plain English.

14. Hannity did waive his speaking fees
at UVSC (utah valley state college) because Michael Moore was coming the next week. UVSC still had to pay his travel costs (around $15,000+) although he used the private jet of a Utah resident. I think he demanded travel via a private jet. I read that his normal speaking fee is $100,000.

16. Sully's just lashing out due to embarassment
He had a moment of clarity last month and rightly called the Bush administration for the homophobic thugs they are....now that his gambit didn't pay off, he's going to try to claw his way back into the good graces of those who would sooner put him in an internment camp than acknowledge him.

Fuck Andrew Sullivan and all the wavering assholes of his ilk.
