Roe Vs. Wade Is In Great Peril My Friends
Edited on Sat Nov-06-04 10:29 AM by zinsky
I live in Minneapolis and almost daily walk past a Planned Parenthood office, where women can recieve, among other things, abortion counseling and early term abortions. Usually there is one or two Right-to-Life people standing quietly outside, reading a book. The day after the election was conceded by Kerry, there was a huge and noisy crowd outside the clinic, blocking the sidewalk, chanting and being obnoxious.

The battle has been engaged, folks. Roe v. Wade is in great peril these next two years. The Repugs see this as a window before the 2006 midterm elections, as Iraq turns into a pile of shit before the eyes of the world.

Be warned and be ready to fight like hell against this government intrusion into personal decision-making.

1. Overturning Roe v. Wade will never stop abortions
anymore than right to lifer's will ever be satisfied with JUST overturning Roe v. Wade. They want it all. An end to all contraceptives, in any form.

2. Political Republicans want the issue
and not the repeal of Roe v. Wade. Same thing with the marriage amendment.

In his heart of hearts (a heroic assumption that he even has one, to be sure), Rove is dreading the day when either one of these issues is taken away.

3. Quite correct...
Look at the Bush family itself. The men toe the anti-choice line while the women do a a wink-and-nod to pro-choice.

The Republicans do NOTHING for their evangelical base other than toss out the right words and pass a little symbolic legistation.

"Partial-birth" abortion ban? Less than 1% of abortions are done after 20 weeks, fewer still in the third trimester. And there are alternatives for late abortions other than intact dilation and extraction. And they were only able to squeak it by by painting the procedures in the most gruesome terms.

Supporting a Constitutional ammendment banning gay marriage? Purely cynical. There's not a chance in hell that two-thirds of the state legislatures will ratify this one. Plenty of principled conservatives -- yes, they exist -- are adamantly against playing with the Constitution this way, too. But there's no risk in supporting the amendment in Red land. It gets some votes and requires no action whatsoever.

Getting "filth" off TV? Yeah, right... The Fundie Right are the foot soldiers, but corporations are the bankers. Go after Howard Stern -- he doesn't support Bush anyway -- and Janet Jackson through the FCC by slapping a symbolic fine on them, but, baby, keep those media profits rolling in. Ka-CHING is the theme song of the GOP.

You know who would suffer the worst if the GOP enacted the Religious Right's agenda? The leaders of the "Christian" right! They are the one who gain power and contributions by demagoging these issues. With no Communists to kick around, gays are a perfect foil for their fear-mongering. Eric Hoffer said it best when he noted that a mass movement of true believers can do without a Messiah, but they must have a Devil.

4. Actually, it's 3/4 of the states
that would have to ratify any amendment. It's 2/3 of the House and Senate needed for passage of it.

For those who would like to break up the country peacefully a la the old Soviet Union, I see this as another bargaining chip to use in secession talks with "Jesusland." The leaders of New Canada can frankly tell "Jesusland" that their 18 states will likely always be able to block any of the hot-button social issues changes in the Constitution and federal laws needed to make this a "Christian" nation once more.

"Let my people go" in reverse. Tell the (self-)righteous "Israelites" of "Jesusland" that Atlantic Seaboard, New England, Upper Midwest and West Coast states want to return to the "fleshpots" of Egypt with their Canadian brethren.
