Edited on Sat Nov-06-04 12:40 PM by mopaul
that way, only they will feel the brunt, instead of spreading the boycotts all over and none of them feeling it. then, when red lobster feels the pain in the pocket book, and the boycott power of the people, the next targeted bush supporting corporation will give in quicker. like a lazer.

Will the rest of you join in a boycott of Red Lobster? Does anyone know the political leanings of the Olive Garden? We're using that as kind of a replacement for Red Lobster, but I'd hate to be giving my hard earned $ to another * shill.

26. Those restaurants suck ass.
I'm already boycotting those bland, horrid McRestaurants on general culinary principle anyway, but thanks for giving me an official reason.

30. I don't eat at chain restaurants anyway - the food sucks
We have an awesome mom & pop seafood restaurant near us, and a little Italian place up the street owned by :gasp: a real Italian family. My favorites are the rib shack at the end of my street (literally a shack but Awesome!) and this bistro in our town with an incredible menu that changes daily, not to mention the numerous family-owned Mexican restaurants around here. I can't even remember the last time we ate at a restaurant chain.

34. Absotively agreed.
I'll always pick a locally-owned restaurant when I have a choice. There are plenty around where I live; and it always gives me a good feeling in side when I know that my hard-earned pay is going back into my own community--not going to enrich some scumbag half a world away.

Well, that's the theory anyway. I've probably enriched some local scumbags...

19. I applied to Olive Garden once.
They made me take a personality test. I guess I flunked because I didn't get the job.

A lot of the questions seemed to focus on how I deal with authority and rules.

22. You're right
but there are only chains near my workplace. My home is almost forty miles away from my workplace, and there's a great selection of locally owned restaurants there. Most of them are minority owned (Mexican). We only use them when we're home. The food's better anyway!

My neighbor told me that it would be difficult say in Arkansas because all they have is fricken Walmart.

32. Haven't stepped foot in a Walmart in YEARS
Americans are addicted to what they perceive as convenience. People think it's cheaper and more convenient to go to Walmart. Truth is, the lines are long, traffic is terrible around the stores, and everyone I know spends MORE money at Walmart, because they buy all this shit they don't need. Guess I'm weird. If I need groceries I go to the grocery store, harware - the hardware store, clothes - clothing stores, etc. What a novel concept.

9. One month? My boycotts are permanent. So change targets monthly
But keep the original boycott, keep adding. You wouldn't believe how many corps I boycott, and I live a good life. Plenty of alternatives.
Make new boycotts, but keep the old. One is silver, the other is gold.

35. We're doing that!!!
There is an ongoing post entitled "I need a list of Dem/Repug businesses" here in GD. Several of us are in the process of collecting data (on both national and state levels) of who to patronize and who to avoid. Please look at it, and feel free to add!

We're especially looking for small businesses in your own individual commnities that are either fundie-based or support Chimpy - or both, which is usually the case.

12. ok, but can we have a choice of several?
not hundreds, but more than just one. I hate Red Lobster and never go there anyway, haven't shopped at Wal-Mart for over 10 years and refuse to even consider a Sam's Club card. Give me somebody who gets my money now and I will make sure they no longer do!

to worry about short boycotts. Listen to you- you can only live without Red Lobster for one month or Walmart till after Christmas? Build alternative business structures then we will not need them at all.

The one and only time I ate at Red Lobster was back in 1986 and I wasn't impressed - haven't been back since.

29. Yes, yes! Absolutely!
The only thing that I want to add is that a boycott needs publicity. I would suggest that we consider having someone or some group that can give publicity to such a boycott. I question if our not going to Red lobster/Olive Garden for a month will make a huge difference in an economic sense. The publicity that should go with a boycott helps fill the gap. But this is certainly a creative idea that represents the direction weneed to go in.
