In my political science course I take which I enjoy a lot, I and a few of my fellow students were given the chance to go to the Dirksen building to meet Bruce Laingen, who was one of the hostages in the Iran hostage crisis twenty five years ago. I didn't know much about what happened but we saw a frontline on it and it was very interesting. After school, we drove down to DC and go to meet Mr. Laingen, a veteran of WWII and long time foreign service diplomat, I shook his hand, he had quite a strong handshake. He believes that public service is a noble career and I agree with him. I didn't know what he would think about what's going on in the world. When he was asked by a student what he thought of Bush's putting Iran on the axis of evil, he said that was so simplistic and wrong to do and that we should talk not bomb Iran. He said he was a registered republican but he seemed to me honestly to be quite dissatsifed with the Bush adminstration's policie and even admitted as such. He also to me surprise has a lot of respect for Jimmy Carter and credits him with their release, he didn't even bring Reagan up once nor did he insult Carter. He was a very interesting speaker who I am glad took the time to meet informally with students and talked with many of them one on one. He also in a way has made me considered foreign service as a possible career though I don't think I can learn the languages of the countries I want to travel to which are mostly Eastern European ones. This was an interesting experience, just letting you all know that there are some great people out there.
